Music re-enters my life

So the other day I was bored, so I picked up Chris’ old bass guitar and fooled around with it. A few days later I picked it up again when Chris was playing guitar and we started jamming. He was pretty much ecstatic – he loves playing with people, but really hasn’t had the opportunity since college. If only he’d known all along that I can just pick up instruments and play them!

At any rate, I obviously am not very good yet, but hey I can play some basic Weezer songs and am making up some bass lines for stuff Chris has written. I am also working on Santana’s “Smooth” – because it’s the only song I could think of that had a sweet bass part.

Here’s the thing though – this old bass is fucked up completely. The electronics barely work (I have the cord like taped to the dumb thing). But that’s not the worst of it, oh no. It has false strings right now (god it sounds awful), and to top it off, the neck is bent. So the strings stick up off the fingerboard a hell of a lot further than they’re supposed to. Now you’ll recall that my hands are extremely small to begin with – bass itself is not such a great choice of instrument for them – but with the strings up so high it’s even MORE difficult for me to play. So what is a girl to do?

Order a bass off of rondomusic.com. I cannot wait for it to get here. I actually tried out an Ibanez at Guitar Center today. Holy hell so much easier to play than this piece of crap… but at $199 slightly expensive for someone who’s just messin around with it. So for just $99 I’m gettin a brand spankin’ new white Rondo electric bass in the mail. Hopefully by Wednesday. W00t.

At around the same time I picked up the bass, I decided to sit down at my piano that’s been sitting in my living room collecting dust for a year. I’ve played a lot in the past couple weeks and I’m really enjoying it! I seriously need to get a tuner here though, it sounds god awful. I’ve played a few Sonatas (mostly Haydn), a little Mendelssohn, a little Grieg, (a little seltzer down your pants… anyone? anyone?) some Debussy and some Brahms. I kind of suck at the moment, but I just need to practice and get some finger strength back. I’m actually surprised at what I’ve remembered – some fingerings of tricky passages are apparently still in my brain. Crazy!

So anyway, music has re-entered my life! Very exciting.
