Musical Things
No one ever leaves me notes anymore. It’s kind of sad really, but I suppose it’s my fault for not realy taking time to read anyone else’s entries. I do sometimes, but I don’t always leave notes. I should. (Oh, and thanks to those of you who have! Like wishful dreamer…)
So I wasn’t elected band historian. Trent got it, and I suppose it’s for the best. He’s on the yearbook staff and can probably do that job better because of it. Perhaps I can be on sort of a committee to help with the pics or something. Besides, it’s not like I’m not doing enough already. To tell you the truth, after I heard his thirty second speech I wanted to vote for him too. Hehe… ahh well.
I’m seriously incredibly pumped for this years marching band/football season. I’ve probably said that a million times already, but it’s true. I just want this year to be awesome. I want it to be fun and very successful. Mr. V is exactly what this band needed. Because there’s so much less of a generation gap it just works very well, you know? 23-year-old band directors are fun! Lol. It’s like he can be the teacher and guy that blows the whistle, but off the field he can almost hang out with us and it’s cool.
Hmmm… did I mention we’re playing a BEATLES show this year? Yup! Isn’t that sweet?!? And we also are going to try to play some of the Firebird Suite sometime during the season. Now THAT’s a new thing for this band. There are just so many changes that it’s absolutely awesome. Some people are being really accepting and are just as pumped up as me. Others I don’t think want to work and aren’t giving Mr. V the chance he deserves. Hopefully, though, by the end of the season they’ll love band again.
Dad and I finally got together and practiced for Sunday. We’re playing a Duke Ellington standard called “Come Sunday” which is not only in the Real Book, but also in our hymnal. So that’s cool. I’m playing the bridge through once by myself on piano, then my dad joins me and we play the entire thing once through (he’s on tenor sax), and then repeat the bridge. It should be good.
I hope I get those darned diminished arpeggio things in my piece. I’m playing Polonaise op. 26 no.1 by Chopin. It’s really an awesome piece. In the middle of the first section/motif there are these rather hard diminished runs… sometimes I get them and sometimes I don’t. I’ll just keep practicing them. The actual middle section sort of features a left hand melody with the right hand not only playing back up chords, but also a sort of counter-melody. It’s gorgeous! I can’t wait to perform it!
