FebMusMo #2 – Guilty Pleasure

 So.  I was going to use the other prompt but couldn’t find the song I wanted to use posted online… I’ll have to put it up later.

Today’s prompt is: "Play your favorite guilty pleasure song (or song that you’re afraid to admit that you listen to)."

The song is "Break Apart Her Heart" by Good Charlotte

 So.  The explanation?

First off.  The message is crap.  I mean… In order to get a girl to like you, you have to treat her like shit?  Yeah, that works if you’re going after a girl with crap self esteem, but if you’re wanting someone who you’d want to be a partner instead of a strung along teenybopper, you might want to rethink your idea of a relationship.

Secondly!

Ben’s been trying to get me to listen to what he considers to be good punk music.  So I’ve been listening to a lot of 311, Bad Religion, The Cure, etc. etc. Well… I was listening to Pandora and this song came on… and I realized, I kinda liked it.  Kind of really liked it.  So I emailed Ben about it:

My email to Ben:

I don’t know if this is a confession and I should ask for absolution buuut —

I think Good Charlotte is growing on me.  I’ve listened to 3 songs of theirs, and while I don’t agree with the message in one, I think they’re kind of catchy… in like a pop punk sort of way.  Or maybe a teeny-bopper punk.

Either way. ::snicker::

Please don’t disown me. Hehehe.

Ben’s reply:

I own(ed) the first album. I saw them in the first year at warped tour… (there wasn’t much else playing) and thought they were alright for pop punk. It sounds cliche – but they *are* pop punk, after all – but I didn’t care for anything past that first album. Even that one was hit or miss. After working at hot topic for long enough I was able to see the formula that they were made with. You had your bad boy, the singer, the dorky skinny "I feel sorry for him" guy (I think he played bass), the jock/fratboy (drums?), and even the "I’m too old to be in a cool band" guy. It was pathetic… but not as pathetic as the fact that it worked. I hated the vocalist. Mascara, a mohawk, and a bandana over half your face? Seriously dude? Goth, punk, and rapper? No. Fucking pick one. Hell, pick two. Goth and punk are siblings, so I could live with that…. but all three? You just want as much proverbial curb appeal as possible, don’t you?

bleh.

It is, as you say, catchy though. Then again… it’s supposed to be. If you can take it for what it is, it isn’t bad. It’s sort of like a horror movie or "chick flick" in that way. Artistically: crap. But when you watch them because they are what they are… you can get something out of it. Or, you know, like a chilidog. You know you shouldn’t eat them, you know it’s made of shit and shoeshine, but sometimes you just want to scarf one down – and boy does it hit the spot when you do. ;-]

… I’ve never heard a band compared to a chilidog.
