standing in line at a book store today

trying not …NOT…to listen to the woman standing in line behind me . It’s impossible…she’s 1 foot away from me and going on and on about how she will only read a book that OPRAH recomends. As soon as i heard this i couldn’t help myself…I had to turn around a take a look at her. She looked pretty much like what i expected her to look like ….mid to late 40’s , decently dressed with a look that shows some inteligence…but then again looks can be decieving.

When i turned around and looked at her I couldn’t help but to have a bit of a smirk on my face. She stopped what she was saying and looked at me. I couldn’t resist..

ME: " I’m sorry for interupting, but you will only read what Oprah tells you to read? Oprah the talk show host?"

Her : "yes…I turst her judgement 100%"…" she would never tell me to read something that wasn’t good."

Me: " I’m sorry , but I don’t think anyone has the right to tell you what you should think is good or not…especially when it comes to books, art or culture."  ( I looked down at the book i was about to buy { Jennifer Government by Max Barry } and wonder if Oprah would give it a thumbs up or down…porbably down )

Her : " Well her and I think exaxctly alike on almost everything. So I trust her judgement"

Me: This is where i think i may have offended her " I mean no disrespect, but the chances of you and her thinking the exact same way is almost impossible…She’s a billionaire who is surrounded by complete lavishness. I’d be surprised if she has ever stepped foot into a Chapters or Barns and Noble. and if she has, I bet she had the store closed to the public so she could shop in private. People like her have done very well for themselves and I don;t hold it against them. But I don;t think they have the right to tell others whats good or bad, just because they are famous.:

The Womans friend  whom she was talking to before i so rudely interupted had the biggest smile on her face reached out and shook my hand and said thank you for saying it before she could.

I think people today put way too much stock into what the entertainment world tells them to. They try to tell us how to live our lives , what to read, what to wear, what music we should be listening to…How can someone like Oprah or Martha stewart or Tom Cruise for that matter even know what it like to be an average person. They can’t . They have no frame of reference of what it’s like to be normal. I have no idea who this quote is from , but it makes perfect sence " IN THE OLD DAYS YOU HAD TO BE SPECIAL TO BE FAMOUS…NOW YOUR SPECIAL IF YOU ARE FAMOUS "

I’d like to think that sooner or later she will stop drinking the Oprah flavored Kool-Aid and try a book by an unknown author. Knowone can tell you what foods you like or that red is better than blue…it’s up to individule.

then again…thats just my take on it…what the fuck do i know? I’m a nobody.

later fuckers
