[just to keep it interesting]

After two long, intense years… I am proud to say that I have graduated with a degree in veterinary technology! This summer I will take board exams to be eligible for my license. I am beyond thrilled!

And just to keep things interesting, I got a new job.

Yea, pretty much my reaction, too. Here’s the story: I had to do clinical hours for school, and I could only do half of them at the clinic I am employed at, so I had to pick a different clinic for the rest. I did some at a large specialty/referral center, and some at another emergency clinic. While I was at the ER clinic, it was mentioned to me that there was a job opening. I enjoyed my time there, really liked the owner, and was considering applying. The clinic is owned by a husband (administrator) and wife (veterinarian). Before I had a chance to apply, however, I received a very interesting email from the husband:

“Hello Amanda,

I wanted to let you know that [veterinarian] was very pleased with the work you had done while volunteering at our clinic and we got a lot of positive feedback from our staff as well. I know you already have a job but I would like to make sure you’re aware that we do have an open position and after having a chance to work with you it seems like you would be a great fit at [clinic]. If this seems like something that would interest you we would be happy to discuss employment with us further. No hard feelings either way but let me know what you think.”

I figured that it couldn’t hurt to talk with them and get the details. Turns out they were looking for someone full-time (36 hours per week, three 12-hour shifts). We talked, they told me about the pay scale, etc. I decided to pursue it, and received an offer! I start May 26th, and will be making $3.25 more an hour than I currently do. Plus it seems like a really positive, laid-back atmosphere (which I do not currently have… I work with some intense people, and there can be issues with lack of respect). So I decided I couldn’t turn it down.

Since a full time schedule there works out to just three days per week, I am going to be staying on at my current clinic two days per week as well. Initially I was being transitioned to full time at my current clinic, but five days per week. So now I will work five days per week between the two, for a total of around 54 hours. The extra money will be quite nice, as we are saving up for a trip and trying to get moving on our kitchen remodel.
