[indian summer]

Early October and the temperatures have been in the upper 70’s to 80 degrees for days (and it seems they will be that way for days to come). I love this time of year – just when you think summer’s gone and you’re going to have to break out the winter gear, you’re given a reprieve with a burst of gorgeous weather. Add the fall colors to that, and it’s just about perfect. We took advantage of it on Friday – I took half a vacation day and left work at 1:00. I raced home, where Greg was waiting with the cooler loaded into the truck and the boat hooked up. I changed into my bikini and a summery outfit, grabbed the beach bag I had packed the night before, and we headed for the lake.

Despite not quite being warm enough to swim, it was still a wonderful afternoon. We idled around the lake just exploring, raced back and forth at top speed a couple times, then threw anchor and had some food and chatted. A little more exploration came next, and we pulled the boat out of the water after four glorious hours, as the sun began to set and the air got chilly. It was a perfect stolen afternoon, yet bittersweet with the knowledge that it will be the last, as we are taking the boat to be winterized in preparation for storage. But I’m already dreaming of next summer – there are tons of lakes to explore around us, plus our northern getaways on the river. I’m eagerly awaiting camping, boating and barbecuing. Winter better be over fast!
