Thoughts of High School
As the days turn into weeks and the weeks into months and then the years arrive and time seems to fly by so fast my mind wonders back to the kind and gentle days of high school.
When I was in High School I could not wait to get out to face the Real World. Little did I know that High School was a great time for me and I should have enjoyed it more than I did. Smart I was not, but I had fun anyway. Most of the time I kept thinking that school was not real and that I would never be able to use any of the things I was tested on in real life. I was correct on most of those thoughts but that is another subject.
Most of my time in school was spent playing sports because I was a big person. Who knew that you did not have to be smart to get ahead, just big!
As the years flew by I did not think much about my high school in the Heart of Texas and did not have any idea what might have happened to my school friends. Once I lived my life and had so much fun being out and about my attention turned to old school friends.
While visiting the folks at home I just happened to be in the home town when Richfield High School had it’s 20 year reunion. The reunion was not all that great but seeing all those I had gone to school with was Great. The Richfield reunion was just like the ones you see on TV except this was with real people. It was fun matching our year book faces (on the name tags of course) up with the names and the real person wearing the tag. We talked, drank, ate, danced and had fun talking about the old days and the new days.
It was fun to see who became the doctor, nurse, lawyer, teacher, PHD, policeman, military person, pilot, wife, mother, and so on. None of us seemed to have gone in the direction we thought we would have gone. No one believed I was telling the truth about my job or life since I was always the quiet reserved person. Life is just so full of surprises.
The job kept me from the 30th Richfield reunion but there was a web site and I did get to see some of the pictures. Then came classmates.com and that was a way to keep up with all the folks from all the schools I had attended. Yep, I signed up, put my name out there and within a week I had heard from people I thought were dead. Who would have thought that all of us old folks would all be looking to see what happened to each other.
It is true in some cases that we like to look back on the old days every now and then.
High School was Great Fun or so it seems so now.
Do you know where your old high school friends are?
I know where a few of them are…I’d like to live in Texas, I think. I’m from Virginia (Richmond). Have been able to read some of your first entries (up til today)…you mentioned college…do you work at one? Is it Randolph Macon?
