Good and Bad

Owen had his check-up, and it went well. It was a new nurse and she was all confused about our immunizations, and trying hard to be tactful – “um… so… I see he hasn’t had the MMR… and the varicella… is that… on purpose??” and glancing at her chart/shuffling papers. Why yes, it is on purpose. We’re all set. He did have the final Hep B shot though, which brings him up-to-date – for us, at least.

The doctor was also really nice about his weight, actually, saying that we’re doing all the right things, and it should “come out in the wash” as he grows. I did use her to back me up on the conversations we have regularly with Owen re: how important it is not to eat past when you’re full & wait on seconds and see if you’re still hungry. Always nice to have some back up.

I’m having a problem with the right side of my jaw – have been for weeks. It hurts to chew, but not like TMJ pain, and it’s not my teeth. It goes away if I take motrin. But I wish it would go away completely.

Also – Chris had to come back early from work. He was more than two hours away when it become clear that the Toyota’s transmission has finally decided to give it up. He made it back very carefully, and set up an appointment with our car guys. SO much money. I’m trying not to freak out about it, but it’s very stressful.

I did get out in the garden this morning and tied up my tomatoes, picked cucumbers, beans, and peas (and Japanese beetles – one flew into my mouth yesterday while I was picking them into the soapy water bucket – SO GROSS – I spit it out, obv). I didn’t get to plant seeds, but I did prepare the beds, so I’ll do that tomorrow probably.

Garden PSA: look out for those big black grenade-like poops left by hornworms. Found some on a potato plant (they love tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant – the nightshade family) and it took me 15 minutes plus Chris’s help to finally find the sucker. Bt’d the potatoes and as much as the tomatoes as I could – ran out. I’m going to keep a close eye out for them. The damage happens fast, but if you find the poop you know the hornworm is lurking/eating even if you can’t find him…

Since we’ll be car-less Thurs, Fri, Mon and Thurs & Fri next week, I’m trying to make some plans. I was planning to pick blueberries, but that won’t work. Maybe in the afternoon if there’s a cool day & Chris comes home earlier. I called to reserve a 1/2 bushel (20lbs) of cucumbers from our farmstand and am going to pick those up this afternoon, so I can get the pickles made, so that’s good. And I think I’ll get a load of green beans too – I can get those in the freezer as well. Then I was planning swim playdates here anyway, so I’ll firm a few of those up for when we’re carless. So that part should be fine. It’s just the friggin’ money of it all…

From what Ive read of you, you dont strike me as a junky eater family. I think as long as he’s making mostly healthy food choices and being active (which it seems you guys are!) Im sure it’ll all even out as he grows!! Curious, but do you opt out of any others besides MMR and varicella? Delayed schedule with the rest? Its interesting to me to hear other’s views regarding vaccines.

we did a delayed schedule with Fiona, and at 2.5, I think shes mostly caught up but has not had chicken pox or HepB (maybe others? thats all Im remembering without looking it up). I waffled on Prevnar, but ended up doing it, mostly out of feeling pressure from her old peds office.

Owen will probably slim down as he goes through puberty. Hopefully he doesn’t become self-conscious about it before that happens. Ahh car issues. No fun at all :/

We are having food issues with Marilyn as well. Different issues but they all end up being the same thing. Sam is skinny, but constantly eats past full and makes his stomach upset. I don’t know how to get through to either of them.

I need to get in the garden over the next couple days!

I got out and picked my first batch of green beans yesterday. Love fresh beans from the garden! Japanese beetles are crazy here too. I planted a little row of sunflowers next to the beans and I now have decimated stalks where flowers and leaves should be. Grrrr. Haven’t seen any sign of the hornworms yet. Need to triple chedk the garden before we leave on vaca so they don’t go to town while we’regone. Sorry to hear about the car repairs/expense. :/ And yes, you guys definitely seem to be very active and have a healthy diet. Our pediatrician once told me that kids tend to grow out right before a growth spurt where they grow up.

My brother went through a heavier phase as a kid and as soon as he hit puberty he shot up like a weed and is now a stick. You guys eat healthy foods and are so active! I’m sure it will all even out in time 🙂

RYN: The one of Eleanor in the rocks is lovely, isn’t it? Rob had climbed right up and was playing peek a boo with her through a hole. I think she was a bit nervous because we were VERY high up, I reckon she’d climbed about 100 feet up a rock face to get into that little alcove! And then Rob was sitting on top of the rocks she was sheltering under…
