Leading By Example

Sometimes I get super frustrated with the fact that my boss doesn’t come in to the office until 10am and leaves around 3:30 or 4 every day, sometimes earlier.

It only bothers me because he is SO PARTICULAR with when I come in, and when I leave. If I’m 15 minutes late, it’s a big deal. In fact, he once nearly ‘wrote me up’ for it, and my excuse was that my bus ran late several times. It was true, sometimes.

It’s just… how are you going to be a good example when you don’t have any set hours yourself?

He claims that he works nonstop… always texting with clients or sponsors, but I don’t believe it. I definitely know that texting with clients most of the time isn’t work. And I also know that most sponsors don’t like to work off the clock. Friday afternoons are notoriously dead. The action sports world is known for being laid back.

So, what the fuck.

I know I shouldn’t complain, because I like it better when he’s not around. I think that the anticipation of not knowing when the door is going to open is what bothers me too. If he told me, "I’m not going to be in until 10am" then I’d be like, oh cool. But because he hasn’t said anything. I’m in the dark.

He has a conference call in 10 minutes and I don’t know where he is.

It’s just frustrating.

I hate the double standard.

I guess, when you’re the boss, and the owner of your company, you can do whatever you want. But also, it affects my motivation because instead of doing my half-year financial reports for our clients, I’m sitting here OD’ing.

We’re both the problem.

Crows had their babies at some point in the last month and now all the stupid baby crows are making these god awful noises at all times of the day. They sqwack and then sound like they’re dying when their mothers regurgitate their food in their mouths. It’s LOUD. And I hate them.

Paco and I booked our hostel and hotel for our trip!

We’re staying in a hostel, or rather, guest house, for 6 nights, and then staying at a nice hotel the last night.

Total for an entire week’s stay will only be $170 for lodging. What.

The hostel totaled $100 for 6 nights and the hotel is $70 for the night.

AH. I’M SO EXCITED.

Last night I walked from work to Greenlake, met up with Katie, and we ended up not walking the lake. Instead, we walked about a mile to a frozen yogurt place and indulged a little.

It’s the second time in my life I’ve been to a frozen yogurt place.

I only got 1/2 cup of yogurt, and a very small sprinkle of coconut and chocolate syrup. I think I did okay, calorie-wise.

I took a shower, and went to Paco’s. We grilled our hot dogs (veggie dogs for moi) and then searched the internet for our hostel/hotel.

Pretty good night.

I have to go to Big 5 or some other sporting goods store tonight to get a pump for my yoga ball. I can’t find mine. And I want to get started on these crunches, man.

I think I’m going to walk there from work, instead of walking straight home. That will add another 2 miles to my trip, which will then total about 5 miles total.

I stepped on the scale today and am lighter. Not by much, but it’s sort of working. I anticipate it will only get better.

My new intern sucks so bad. I miss Neil.

She is SO BORING. She walks in and is all quiet, hardly says hi. She doesn’t tlak about what she did on her weekend. She doesn’t have anything interesting to say. She doesn’t ask questions. She just sits there, quiet as a mouse, and she takes forever to do anything.

I regret hiring her. I really do.

Neil’s roommate interviewed and we didn’t choose him because his writing sample wasn’t quite as strong as Krista’s.

I wish, so wish, that we’d chosen him.

I have decided that I like males more. Or at least, I would like a more outspoken female intern.

Just very disappointed.

I have to have a conversation with her, like tomorrow, as a "How are you feeling about this?" discussion. Because, I’m not feeling it. If she’s not feeling it, which she doesn’t seem to be, we’ll have to cut her loose.

Pretty frustrating.

Especially since we’re ramping up to the Olympics and I NEED someone who is research-savvy, AND sports savvy.

And fucking INTERESTED. Shit.

But I really do miss Neil. I bug him every week to come to Thursday kickball. He hasn’t come yet. I wish he would.

Well, it’s 10am and the boss just walked in. Huh.

Its one thing owning your own business and maybe working from home…but its another when you stroll in whenever and whenever. Mayne just ask him to let you know when he thinks he is going to come in so you’re not left wondering. If I had no idea where my boss is or when my boss is coming, I’d never get anything done. But I also have access to his calendar…and I can text him.

Isn’t that fairly normal for managers / owners? I know the managers around here don’t have “core hours” but they are on the clock basically 24/7 for urgent situations, while support staff is paid to be here core hours – 8 to 5. I have the option to leave my laptop at work every day, my managers do not. I think it’s just the nature of the job description that causes different schedules.

And definitely agree with the note above – he should brief you on his daily schedule. Maybe you could approach it in a way that makes you seem super proactive and score some points!

I think when you’re the boss you can do whatever you want. Personally I don’t believe in 8-5pm as long as you get your shit done. I will sometimes work from home at night but only because I want to look good to my boss hahaha if she sees an email from 8pm she is impressed. Maybe try that to get brownie points and he wont bother you about being late anymore.
