Things I hate

Sorry, Gerber. That baby is real cute and all, and you have some of the most affordable baby items in existence, but I really hate you right now. These plastic pants have microscopic leg holes and are baggy everywhere else. Your cloth diapers are tiny, stupid, and non-absorbent.

I also hate me and my clumsiness. I have spent all morning trying to figure out how to properly fold and pin a diaper, and nothing is working. Also, 2.0 does not appreciate being a guinea pig, which means diaper changes just got WAY MORE FUN. I have compared her to a coked-up octopus before. The comparison still holds.

And YOU, Internet! You are no help! Tutorials, diagrams, instructions, videos, they all assume the baby will just lie there, docile and content, perfectly still. Where are they giving out babies like this? I want one! Even The Child, who is one of the most docile children I’ve ever known, was not that still for any diaper change ever until about the age of 18 months.

Oh, yes, I know all about Snappis. I want some. I covet them. Which brings me to the next thing I hate: Babies R Us. You are stupid and you have a stupid face. One tiny aisle dedicated to the lousiest cloth diapering supplies ever made, and all you have are pins. Given the not-so-recent trend toward cloth diapering, I think it’s high time you got with the program.

And YOU. You people who say old-school cloth diapering it so EASY and SIMPLE and LA DE DA. You lie. You lie, and do you know what happens every time you lie? A baby cat dies. That’s what. Think on it.

UPDATE: I still hate Gerber, but I’m no longer so stymied by pinning. I got some bars of soap out, stuck them in old socks, and use them for pincushions. The pins go in much easier now.

I also decided to ditch the prefolds. They make me too crazy. Instead, I’m just using flat fabric and using the origami fold. I fold them ahead of time and keep them in the drawer under the changing table. I think I will try the kite fold next. It will better contain 2.0’s more enthusiastic output.

Those diaper covers, though… Tomorrow I get a vacation from kids. The Guy, may his name be praised, is kicking me out of the house for most of tomorrow and all of Saturday. I will be childfree until Sunday morning. Did you hear those angels singing? No? That’s because they weren’t angels. They were me. And I sometimes sing off key. I love my kids, and I want a million more, but it has been more than two years without a real break. I’ve had evenings out, but that’s it.

Anyway, I am going to go to a real diaper store, not Babies R Us (which I also still hate), and I am going to find some Snappis and some diaper covers that are easier to work with. With the kids wearing at least two layers at all times, it really stinks (hah! pun!) to have to remove two pairs of pants just to get the diaper cover off. Meanwhile, the wet diaper is soaking into either the new diaper or the changing pad. Not a good system.

Amazon.com for diapers…seriously. I LIVE by the Thirsties (fold up a prefold inside one of those in the triple fold and you’re good to go! Don’t even have to worry about pins or anything! {Although, I do the jelly roll fold on my 2 year old just to make sure the poops stay in…but honestly don’t need it. It’s just for my comfort}) and they’re relatively economical. I started cd’ing about 3 months ago and won’t go back (well, minus the extra long car trips because who really wants to travel 8+ hours with a poopy diaper in the back?!). Let me know if you have any questions…if I can’t answer them, I know a few people on here than can 🙂

I haven’t jumped on the CD wagon (yet) so I’m no help. But I share your hatred for BRU. Hooray for a break!!!

I think the reason people say it’s easy is bc they invest in the super awesome new diapers which you’re trying to hold off on. Watch craiglist people sell their used ones there. They likely have stains but are clearly clean. When you’re expecting the next baby you could request diapers if anyone wants to gift you 🙂

Not to dissuade you from your awesome diaper covers, but my mom tells me that I HAD to be potty-trained when I’d just turned 2 because my sumo-wrestler thighs of doom were actually being cut by the tiny leg holes in the plastic cover. I think they just don’t consider that most babies have chubby legs. You’d think they’d know better, looking at the cheeks on the Gerber baby…

ryn: I know what you mean about not touching money now. It might be a good deal but it’s still money spent. There’s a time for everything! Yea, there are people out there trying to bless others although they can be hard to find. April sold her diapers really cheap on craigslist which is why I thought of it.

ryn: I know your character to well to think you’re pushy and you didn’t sound so anyway ;). I have considered cding. I wanted to with mj ut not with coin laundry. Now we have machines (at least this yr and next). The only things holding me back are the initial cost, dealing with it at work, and the fact that I often get free diapers from the food bank. I think I buy about half as many diapers and

we’ve used so many store brands with success that I just buy the cheapest. I bought a big box of target brand last month and I still have a bunch. It was 20ucks and I have a coupon for next time…somewhere. I think it would be a ton more appealing if I was home. As it was I had to bring laundry here to catch up on. Yesterday I did 4loads of winter clothes from storage and today another 4 “reg”

loads so that I would be caught up before going out of town. Carissa wants to throw me a shower (although I feel weird since it’s the second baby) and I think I’ll tell her to make it a diaper shower, lol. Esp if this baby is a girl. We won’t really need much. I’m not sure why it logged me out…dum od.

Enjoy your day off!

Why don’t you get some of those sticky/velcro ones that are pre-folded and made for you, that presumably you just slot the baby into?

I am impressed with your cloth diaper venture! I’m granola enough to be expected to do that but I can’t bring myself to deal with the mess! We use to live w/o a washer & dryer and I refused to do them all by hand – hence our hefty diaper contribution to the landfill. I hang my head in shame. Kudos to you, though! Keep it up!
