On keeping open and not-open open journals
As I struggle with the realization that my being in Japan will likely cause my family and friends to be more interested in what I’m doing than they are now, it has dawned on me that it might be nice to be in command of a public venue with which to feature my writing and photography. An "Internet Journal," if you will.
Therein lies the dilemma: would I want my Open Diary to be public, solely associated with me, My Name, to all who would seek it via Faced-book, Twitt-ar, and other manner of services that can be easily traced to me? Not hardly. The OD needs to stay as it is, languishing in a realm of mainly privacy. I started my own website to fill this void, and now I’m caught. I can’t journal too personally in an overtly public and associated-with-me journal, can I?
The only solution (works out great in my mind) is to continue keeping a private journal, and to mainly update the public one with my Japanese exploits, and link to it from here. I suppose as I go I’ll see how appropriate my voice is for people I personally know, and if eventually I’ll work up the courage to say "fuck it" and make it my main journal.

What’s stopping you from writing for a public view? Are there people in your life that are overly-critical? I think you should go for it. It brings great strength to be able to bring your thoughts out into the open. If people around you don’t respect that then they don’t seem like real friends to me… I hope you do it because you deserve to be strong in your thoughts!

I know it’s not even about what people think, but rather having a semi-safe haven for your feelings. I used to have a public diary until a “friend” took something completely unrelated to her personally and brought that drama to my workplace.
