Haiti Overdone *edit*
I don’t want to be the b!tch but I have to play devil’s advocate.
I’m glad people want to help ease the suffering in Haiti, kudos to those of you who are doing it out of a genuine desire to help your fellow man and not just because it is the "In" thing to do right now. But keep in mind, Haiti is a drop in the bucket. It’s one place.
Oh hey, there’s this place in the US that had a really big disaster about 4 years ago called New Orleans, forget about that already?
Because they’re still trying to rebuild their city and their lives. Why aren’t there ads on TV, radio and the internet to help them? What about all of the volunteer organizations that are working their butts off down there? What about all the people who had to give up their homes down there? People who left everything, generations worth of everything, because they simply didn’t have the means to start over. There are houses still empty and boarded up in neighborhoods, businesses that have had to pack it in because they can’t afford to rebuild and reopen their doors? I don’t see ads for helping them.
And let’s not forget the tsunami not that long ago. Do you think the money you donated to them is still just sitting around waiting to be used?
Are you still helping them to rebuild, still donating?
Oh, you’re not?
Why not?
You have the money to donate to Haiti, surely you can keep giving money to all the other people suffering out in the world still.
And what about the every day charities like Habitat for Humanity, ASPCA, cancer research, Children’s Home, Campaign for Prevention of Child Abuse and Family Violence, Children’s Hospital, Feeding America, Make A Wish, Goodwill, Salvation Army, Planned Parenthood, Special Olympics…There are HUNDREDS of national charity organizations just to help AMERICANS!! That’s not even counting LOCAL charities that you can give to!!!
I’m sorry if I come across as That Person, but seriously. I’m not the only one thinking it, I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one saying it either. It just rubs me the wrong way that people are obsessed with helping Haiti but when you ask them what other organizations they support they look at you like you’re speaking some alien language. It’s not okay to donate to Haiti and think that makes you some kind of special gift to the world because you’re not, you’re just one more jerk in the masses trying to act like you’re so great.
Oh and before people ask what I volunteer for/donate to: Habitat for Humanity, local art center, highway clean-up, local SPCA, and a school for underprivileged children. So yeah, I’m allowed to rant about this.
***EDIT***
For the record, laughing my ass off at most of the hate notes I got. For those who thought they were being special leaving private spiteful notes, all my notes are set to private, so newsflash, not a word you said will get to anyone else unless you decide to hype yourself, oh wait, you did that too!
And I never said that giving to Haiti was bad. I was pointing out the hypocrisy of all these people giving money now but in 6-12 months when the people in Haiti need all the money all over again to start the rebuilding process these same people won’t do jack or give jack. That was my point. That people only give because it’s the "IN" thing, and they assuage their guilt about being bad people so 6 months from now when those organizations come asking for more help they’ll say "Oh no I already gave" and slam the door in their face. Just like they did for helping Katrina victims and for the tsunami victims. Just like they do for the ‘everyday charities’. That is the point, that is the real sickness with our society. It takes a tragedy of unimaginable proportions to make people remember that suffering exists.
So climb off your high horse and shove it down your craw you spiteful pricks. I’m pointing out your own hypocrisy too and you just don’t like it.
To those of you supporting, thanks, good to hear I’m not the only apparently ‘spiteful, immature, stupid, selfish, arrogant, vindictive b!tch’ in the world. Kudos to us.
Xx
Yes, many people ARE just joining on the bandwagon, but why is that wrong? Like you said, these people dont donate to anything else, so would you rather they just dont donate at all? Its not like they are taking funds they would otherwise have given somewhere else. Helping is helping… 1 dollar or 100 dollars.
