Lovesong to a Miner

I’ve never been the kind to own
her lovers in part, or in whole
but when it comes to flesh and bone
i’ll take them together
I’ll take them alone.

I’ve done my time with death and dark,
my sentence, that’s a question mark
coz I don’t have the kind of friends
that people trust, that they defend

But you, you like me well enough
you never mention that word: love
you don’t like to be a lyin’ man
or anyone you’re better than

But I miss the way you’d hold my hand
when we walked the city drunk on brandy
in clouds of smoke, kissing the night
breaking the rain, burning the light

Now it’s been so long, you’ve gone so far
I heard  they got you workin hard
They got you in those deep coal mines
where you went to leave your girl behind

But you’re in the dark still, you ain’t changed
and me, well I guess I’m the same
so you keep diggin’ underground
and call someday bout what you found.
