Garbage
She gets on the subway car.
She puts her head on her father’s arm.
He drifts off beside her.
She looks through his grocery bags.
She gives up.
She pouts.
She falls into his side.
I watch this moment of her childhood.
that will disappear forever
She looks at me, a stranger, with suspicion.
She knows I am taking from her.
She knows that I am going through
her garbage.
