Play Me, King

Walking out into the night.

The air hangs stagnant, adding to the cloak of darkness.

The atmosphere is so thick it’s difficult to breathe

each inhalation is hindered by the humidity, and each step is labored, pushing against the density.

My skin becomes sticky with sweat, unable to be in this environment without release.

But I could sit outside all night.

Nights like this, though steaming and heavy, free my mind.

I’m becoming the person I want to be.

I’m no longer a pawn to be manipulated and moved to the position of someone else’s desire.

I’m the queen now.

The most important piece in the game of my own life

The rooks, knights, and bishops are playing too, but only in the background. Their insignificance reflects the past.

I’m controlling now, disproving to those who have doubted my strength in the past.

But then there’s the king.

There’s never a queen without her mate,

her power balanced with his towering necessity

I’ll always need the king.

Do you play Chess? I love the game, myself. Though did you not know that the King is but a figurehead and that the Queen is the most powerful piece on the board? The most integral to his survival? She has the most power, and she always shall. It rests within you.
