the skies, they blink at me [CoA 5]
song: closer – artist: kings of leon
When I began telling people that I was moving to Kansas over a year ago, some of them were already familiar with this new-to-me land. More than once I heard, "Really? It’s very flat."
Turns out, they really knew what they were talking about.
Up to that point, I’d spent all but five years of my life in places where I was surrounded by hills and/or mountains. Such a topographical change can be equal to any culture shock you may experience in a new place.
On Saturday, a hefty chunk of time was spent in the salon, while Ashley, stylist extraordinaire, worked her magic on my hairs. It was quite a sunny day out, with lots of sun reflecting off of the large piles of snow still working on melting their way to oblivion. By the time I got out and onto some other errands I had to do that day, there’d been a great deal of cloud cover roll in. There was a slathering of dark grey clouds, heavy with precipitation, slowly crawling across the sky. By the time I was getting to where I was headed, there’d been several breaks. You could see blue sky and white, whispy clouds sandwiched between thick blankets of grey.
And then it happened.
Off in the distance the cloud cover had shifted in such a way as to give me a momentary optical illusion. It looked like the silhouette of a hillside.
Sometimes the weather conspires to remind you of home. And that is pretty sweet!
[what the "CoA" bit is about]
I was freaked out, in the UK, by all of the greenery. I’d forgotten that, apart from being semi-arid to begin with, my home was at the pointy end of a decade long drought. So I can sympathise. Although I’m freaked out by the idea of a big flat place. Like, it could tilit very slightly, and you’d never know …

Awesome! Yay, reminders of home. 🙂

Yeah, I don’t think I could handle living in a flat place. One thing that weirded me out during my brief stint over yonder was how big the sky was. Sure, there were occasional hills and things, but the sky, the size of it. I couldn’t get over it.

I like hilly landscape. Flat can be boring. 😉
