home garden

Part 1 of the boy’s belated birthday present arrived today. It was a hydroponic’s kit that I’ve been meaning to get since I moved into my apartment (where a flat fee for electricity is included in the rent) over a year ago. He got the exact model I showed him months ago. Apparently, grow-lights are on the way as well. Uber-sweet.

It’s not a large system, meant for only 6 plants, but it’s perfectly sized for the closet in my studio. You know, to keep the cat away. And to grow stuff that’s best kept out of sight. Maybe I’ll leave a pot or two for tomatoes or something, assuming they require a similar light/dark cycle as the other plants. I’m excited. It’s not just about growing my own marijuana – I’m no pot-head, and the yield from plants this size won’t be large. This is more about having a hobby. I’m a bit of a quitter when it comes to hobbies, but I’m hoping this one will stick. The scientist in me enjoys reading about light spectrums and flowering phases, and I want to put this knowledge to use. More than that, I want the satisfaction of putting something together on my own and having it work.  Not having to rely on sketchy dealers for my weed is a nice bonus.

Opening my present was the highlight of an otherwise crappy day. Despite having been up since 6:00 am, I am still an entire day behind schedule. We had a neuro CPC (Clinical Presentation Conference) this morning, which was interesting but kind of annoying since the diagnosis was primary CNS lymphoma, and we haven’t covered hematology-oncology yet. Then there was a Jeopardy style neuro review, which made me realize just how far behind my classmates I really am in my studying. It’s getting better, but I’m still a crammer at heart. At any rate, this and the hour long lunch talk I went to pretty much killed my morning. In the afternoon I worked for about 2 hours, then ran home to pick up my package before the leasing office closed. The office was abandoned for a good 40 minutes, which was another waste of time since, thinking this would be a quick trip, I had left my laptop and notes at school. I got back just in time for birthday cake for a classmate followed by our mandatory-ish research seminar. Got home and couldn’t resist taking a 40 minute nap. Called home, worked for another 2 hours, talked to J, researched safety tips for buying seeds online and am now debating pushing through the night to stay on schedule or going to bed so I can get an early start tomorrow.

This ends another compulsive and uninsightful entry on what exactly I did today, in case the future me will be curious.

Seriously, do not kid yourself. If you are into growing marijuana, you are a pothead beyond a doubt.

Hey that sounds really cool! Growing your own plants, love to do that in the city. On the farm it was easy
