made of nothing except loneliness

The first movement of the moonlight sonata speaks to me blatantly of overwhelming despair.  Whereas the 2nd movement of the 7th symphony seems to tell of acceptance of that same despair, almost encouraging one to dance with it, milk it for all it’s worth.

I hear others speak of how they use music to express themselves, by playing it themselves and by letting their choice of music make a statement.  But music is all interpretation, and any emotion that the listener hears is merely a reflection of their own feelings.  And I wonder, when Beethoven was writing the moonlight sonata if he thought "If I make this sound sorrowful, more people will "relate" to it, and listen to it."  And maybe composers were just as shallow as we are, only interested in their own ends.

The 7th symphony, under further scrutiny, seems to convey disgust over the willingness to whore out your emotions, but not caring enough to stop.

Music is mechanical.  People are shallow.  They don’t play from the heart.  Most of them have none.
