This week’s theme

What is your favorite music? Has it changed as you’ve gotten older?

This is a theme I just couldn’t resist.

In the grades 4-6, I was a Hanson fan.  Personally, I liked “MMMBop” more than “Where’s the Love” but everyone else seemed to think differently.

Through grades 7 and 8 I was a Korn fan.  I had a differend Korn shirt for every day of the week.

In 9th-10th grade I loved KISS and everything 70’s rock.  I wanted a guitar so I could rock out like Ace Frehley.

At the end of 10th grade, I discovered British and Australian music.  My favourite bands became Silverchair, the Vines, and Manic Street Preachers.  I began using the word “bloody” all the time.

Lately, I’ve developed an interest in Stone Sour, the Murderdolls, Rage Against the Machine, and AFI.  I don’t have a clever comment for these yet.

I’ve always loved classical music, especially Beethoven, Chopin, and Schumman.  Playing several instruments has allowed to explore various composers.  And to emulate them in my own compositions.  I also like the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

My dad has had me listening to the Beatles for as long as I can remember.  Also, Neil Young, Harry Nilsson, and various “hippy music”.  Some of that shit is ridiculously catchy.

My mom preferred country, with the likes of Garth Brooks.  I once wrote a not-so-clever parody of “Standing Outside the Fire.”

I am a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber and had the last scene of “The Phantom of the Opera” memorized at one point.

I’ve been a life-long fan of “Weird Al” Yankovic, and even learned how to play the accordian.  poorly.

However, my taste in music hasn’t really changed over the years.  I still like every single one of my “favorite bands”.  I like the music my parents made me listen to, I like the bands I discovered through my sister, I like the bands I discovered on my own.  I like music with and without words.  I like music in other languages.

I do not like rap, however.  Or hip-hop.  Or anything that’s on the Top 40 these days.  Mostly, I don’t know what’s popular.  What I hear on the radio makes me cringe.  Music that’s designed to make everyone happy, but still maintaining a front of being risqué and rebellious.  “Ooh, Eminem said “Fuck” a few dozen times, that’s so COOL!.”  “Listen to this song, it reminds me how much I hate my parents for making me go to school and do homework and live like a respectable human being.  Damn them!”  “This song is by this rapper and it features 8903408713 of his friends!  Not that any of them have talent, but it’s cool to put your tone deaf friends on your albums!”

… I quit.
