Wait, what’s with the goat?

I’m realizing I know nothing at all about the Bible. I went last night to see my dad in a show (he’s a doctor but acts on the side). It was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which as far as I know is (loosely) based on a Bible story.

During the show, I realized that for someone who spends as much time thinking about spirituality as I do, I know pathetically little about religion. I didn’t grow up going to sunday school, so I missed the time when everyone seemed to magically learn all the Bible stories. I know bits and pieces, but I’m so confused.

Can anyone recommend a (fairly quick) way to catch up? I mean, besides actually reading the Bible, cover to cover (as much fun as it would be to wade through the "begets" chapter). I just want a run-down of the basic stories, and what they mean or symbolize.

At some point, I really would like to read the whole thing, but I don’t even know where to start.

Maybe you should get a children’s bible- they have “the basic stories” (with pictures.. YAY! lol) The story of Joseph is an Old Testament story. It’s an amazing thing- his brothers were jealous of him because his father favored him above all. If you wanted to read some “good stories” and have a bible, start with Genesis. There are several stories there (beginning of the earth, Adam& Eve, Noah’s ark, etc)

I wonder if they have a Bible for Dummies? heh. Kidding, but they seem to have one for everything now. Childrens picture bible like your first noter said would probably work. =]

I know bits and pieces but nothing to make up a full story. If someone’s gives you a good link or a book reference or something, let me know!! 🙂

RYN: Kids are great. Kids that you didn’t raise and who therefore do not have the same values as your own kids, those are extremely difficult. Kids who have never in their life been made to follow a single rule……THOSE make you wanna lock yourself in the bathroom all weekend.

I saw two teenage girls at a bus stop, each of about fifteen years of age. In reference to a nearby church, one said “I used to go to church”. The other responded: “Did you read the bibble?” A. It was hilarious B. You had to be there

Oh, My husband also suggests going to a large movie rental chain, like blockbuster and rent movies like the “Gospel of John” that tells Christs life begining to end. Also a new tv version of “The Ten Commandments” that tells the story of Moses from the Old Testament. It is done really well. And also The Nativity Story (dont know if it is on DVD yet) but it is awesome, about Jesus birth.

Then there is also “The Passion of The Christ”, which tells about his last few days here on earth. It’s really graphic and gorry. I wouldnt recommend it, but if you like that kind of thing….

Hmm… I think you can’t catch up all at once… Although the childrens’ bible is honestly not a bad idea… I think you just learn as you go… and you never really stop learning… I don’t know… it’s a toughie…Even though I did grow up in Sunday School I’m really not very well versed in the bible..it’s bad… I should be… hmm… -hugs-

Cliff notes for the bible…. that is kinda funny…. I agree childrens books…. Or actually read the bible…. Genesis: all about creation… adam and eve and noah… etc. Exodus: all about moses freeing the hebrew slaves.. Leviticus and Dueteronomy are probably familiar stories too…. The old Testament is what I consider to be pretty consistant with actual history…

(sorry ran out of room) THe new Testament is mostly about Jesus and his life. So thats where you will find the christmas stories and Easter stories… In the Books of Mark, Luke, Matthew, and John… Hope that helped narrow it down a bit for you! Good Luck!
