You Really Never Know

There’s a guy that lives down the road from us. His name is R and he’s the roommate of a married couple with 2 kids and an English Mastiff. He’s from Montreal and his English isn’t very good, so I think he has a really hard time living out here. He’s a really nice guy, always the first to help out if there’s a broken lawnmower, or car, or whatever. He’ll even snowblow your driveway in the winter just because.

The neighbours across from him planned a surprise birthday party for him. It wasn’t big, just about 6 or 7 of us. And no real meal or anything, just lots of snacks and cake.
B, the organizer, got a hold of a friend of R through his roomate. He had the friend take him out so we could organize the party. When R came back, he saw everyone there and he said “I didn’t know you were having a party”
B said “yes well its your birthday, this is all for you.”
R thought he was being sarcastic, and didn’t believe him at all. B said “we’ve got your favourite chips, this and that. I even called M to take you out so you wouldn’t see us setting up!”
R STILL didn’t believe him! B took the phone number off the fridge and showed it to R, and said “whose number is this?”
R said, “how did you get that?”
B explained to him again that he had planned everything for him, R just about cried. It turns out that at the age of 49, he has never once had a birthday party.

thats adorable. and sad!

It’s amazing how sometimes just one small act that we do and don’t think twice about doing can turn out to be such a profound event in someone else’s life.
