Got my aunt’s dog hit by a car…

Today I slept in until about 1pm. I was really tired because I was up until 4:30am on the computer…lol

Anyways, I got up and then decided to take Ranger for a walk because he was following me everywhere and whimpering and it was getting late. I was origanally going to take him on the 45 minute route we always take. But it was unbelievably cold today! We took a different route and I decided to take a laneway. It was a different one then where we usually go; thus the appeal. But it stretched across a lot of roads and I was thinking that I was going to turn down and head in such a way that there weren’t all kinds of roads because I had let him off the leash.

He was behaving really well, waiting when I told him to, etc. Well, I guess he saw a squirrel and he started to run. I thought, oh great. Here he goes…didn’t think too much of it. But then I saw a car coming. I guess it didn’t really even sink in even then…for some reason I thought it was too far away to get him. I was running to catch up to Ranger, but it was hopeless. He has 4 legs and I have two, I never would have gotten to him. I guess for some reason I thought that he wasn’t going to get hit. I wasn’t watching, I think I looked away as I jogged to catch up with him, but when I looked up again, I saw him hit the side of a car at top speed. I heard the sound of him hitting the car…it was SO loud! I remember screaming his name as I watched him fall onto the asphalt and then scramble to his feet, whimpering.
I ran to him as he ran to me. I was shaking and in shock as I put his leash back on. He had his tail between his legs. When I looked up again, the car had stopped just a little further ahead. The guy got out of his car then backed up to come and talk to me. When Ranger saw the car again, he yelped and ran behind me. When the guy came over to talk to me, he went up to him and started wagging his tail and sniffing him. I can’t even really remember what the guy was saying to me.
I think it was something like, "as long as everyone’s alright" He showed me the dent in the car from Ranger. I don’t even think it registered that it was from Ranger. I think I even thought for a split second that it was already there. He told me that he was in a rush but he knew a guy that could fix it for him for free and it wasn’t a big deal anyway, as long as everyone was ok. I kept saying that I would give him my number for the damage, etc. He asked if it would be better if I talked to his wife because he was in a rush. I think he told me four of five times where his house was and it just didn’t register. He was pointing to it. HE kept asking me if I wanted him to come with me. I was so dazed and out of it…oh man!

I got to the guy’s house and started bawling as soon as I talked to his wife all over again. She was really sweet. She said she probably wouldn’t charge me or anything, they thought they could fix the car through their friend. I felt horrible. She gave me kleenex and she was running around like crazy because I was bawling my eyes out.

Anyways, I got back which was only a few minutes we were no more than half a block away. I cried the whole way back and poor Dylan had to watch me cry all over again when we were inside. Ranger was totally fine. He seemed more concerned about licking my face because I was crying! lol

I told Uncle Mark when he got in, and the first thing he said was, "stupid dog! He’s so thick, isn’t he?" I totally wasn’t expecting that reaction. Auntie Leigh just said, "oh well, it could have happened to any one of us!" I was so surprised. I was well aware that it was entirely my fault. But Auntie Leigh just said, "well, as long as he’s alright". didn’t make me feel that much better…oh gosh…

Well, I’m done talking about my tramatic day! I"m going to sleep, crying makes me tired!

Nikki – Wow, that sounds intense…I’m glad he’s ok, though! -Josh P.S. RYN: You may want to go back an entry on my journal, there’s a reason the latest one is called “Cover”. It’ll explain what happened the other night.
