Survey From The Past, Finished In The Present

6. If you got married to your current love interest and took their last name, what would your full name be?: Heh . . . I’d rather just stay away from love questions right now . . .  (But for my future self’s reflection/ridicule, it would be what Drew’s last name is.)  (Today – Yeah, one day it BETTER be what Drew’s last name is.)

7. What did you get your mom for mother’s day?: Uh . . .  (Today – Um . . .)

I had no idea there was more than one flavor of Swedish Fish. And Pineapple pizza is awesome!

RYN: The “pre 9 and 10” reference is to the show, Doctor Who. The title character is an alien and one distinct trait of his race (The Timelords) is that when he has been mortally wounded, his body will regenerate itself on a molecular level, changing every individual cell and creating an entirely new person. (In reality, it’s a clever way to explain the different actors who have played the part over the last 46 years). With each change, he remains the same fundamental character, though the new actor brings a different set of quirks to the role. Actors 9 and 10 are the two with whom I am the most familiar. So I was really just asking for recommendations on earlier Doctors I should check out. Now, tell me about Angel of the Opera. Is this a real thing? Is it good? I love the original story, but hated The Phantom of Manhattan.

RYN: It’s been many quite a few years since I read Manhattan, so I’m fuzzy on the details. If I recall correctly, what bothered me was that it seemed to undermine most of what had come before. The author seemed to bend over backward to clear the Phantom of his more wicked deeds in the original story. For me this was like a movie sequel where the characters from the original die in the first five mins and you’re suddenly introduced to an entirely new cast. If you know they’re all going to die anyway, you lose the emotional investment in the original. I’m tired, so I’m not sure that I’m making a lot of sense. I did like the idea of the Phantom having fathered a son with Christine. I just read Dracula the Undead and it made no apologies for stealing that sublot. But where I liked it in Phantom, it just made me roll my eyes this time. It was another case of taking a great villain and neutering him to make him a hero for the masses. To be clear, though, I never considered The Phantom to be a villain, just a tragic hero (which is usually the most compelling kind.) Long winded note ends… now.

ryn As you pointed ut, I’m talking about long-past. Hand-me-down Bibles were fairly common at the turn of the twentieth century, especially in large urban areas where people could work for as little as two dollars a week. Also, paperback books came about as the result on Alan Lane’s desire for the workingman to own great books (which, in hardback, could cost up to $25, which…

…doesn’t seem like whole awful lot, until you consider the wages I said were being made. Also, prior to Penguin Books, the first publisher of the greats in paperback, other books of the kind were cheaply-made and poorly written.). My family has one Bible and one Torah that have both been handed down since 1880, so the tradition isn’t dead. ~
