Well, That Entry Was Ironic . . .

The one on epilepsy, I mean.  Yesterday, I got called back by a vet that does treat exotic animals like hedgehogs.  Well, I made the appointment for Smiley for 10:30 this morning.  Rob and I got up around ten so I could drop him off at work and take Smiley over to the vet.

Well, about the only upside of today was that I found this place called Spears that has this INCREDIBLE Oreo pie.  (Dear God in Heaven, that was a good pie.)  I got to the vet, had to fill out the paperwork for her, and brought her in.  The vet gave a tentative diagnosis of, basically, breast cancer.  She said the tumors probably had to do with fused mammory glands.  She didn’t feel comfortable operating on Smiley herself, because she wasn’t sure she could accurately close the wounds, so there was a chance Smiley would die during the surgery.  But she did tell me about another place that could do the surgery more proficiently, I hope.

The only thing I hate is that she didn’t sound very hopeful, even through telling me about the possibility for surgery.  Simply because there’s no telling whether or not they’d get all of the tumor, and if it is cancerous and gets to her lymph nodes, she’s basically a goner anyway.

I’m gonna find out what I can about the surgery and see about going through with it, if it’s a good idea.  If not, I’m just gonna try to make her time left as painless as possible and keep an eye on how much she eats and drinks and if she’s having any problems with that stuff.  As soon as it looks like she is, I’m gonna take her to a vet, see if an exam can be done to find out how much the tumors spread, and if they are blocking off her airways or ability to eat, or have gotten to her liver and wherever else the vet mentioned, I’ll have her put to sleep so she doesn’t suffer.

Yeah.  I’m tearing up as I write this.  I don’t wanna lose my baby hedgehog, but at least I have a plan to help make it fairly painless if I do lose her.  If the surgery is a good idea, though, hopefully it’ll work and she’ll come through it okay.  Unfortunately, I won’t know anytghing on that until I can call on Monday, so I’ll keep everyone posted.

Well, in relation to this entry title and the first line, after I came home from the vet, I cried for a bit, then turned on the TV to distract myself.  About fifteen or so minutes later, the phone rang.  Oh, lemme back it up a bit.  Before I dropped Rob off in the morning, he’d been saying how his stomach hurt on his right side, and was a bit woried about if it was his appendix.  I figured it might just be that he had to go to the bathroom and it just hadn’t hit him yet.  In any case, I wasn’t really worried about him.  But like I said, the phone rang.  I looked on the caller ID and it said Via Christi, which is the hospital around here.  The first thing I thought was, "Oh, God, it’s Rob and he’s going into surgery."

Yeah, it was Rob.  But no, my instantaneous fears were unfounded.  However, he was at the hospital, in the emergency room, because when he got to the food court, he went to sit down at one of the tables to wait for his shift to start, and he had a seizure.  And this is the weirdest thing: apparently, no one saw him have it, despite there being two families and the employees for the food court people there!  It boggles my mind, as well as boggling his.  It’s kinda the same thing as a kid drowning in a pool with fifty people around.  How does it happen?

Anyway, the paramedics got there and put an oxygen mask on Rob and kept asking him if he wanted to go to the hospital, and Rob kept saying no, no he didn’t need it, no, he didn’t want to go, etc.  But when he wasn’t able to give his phone number, or the correct day, or other general info like that, the paramedics didn’t give him any choice.  Oddly enough, if they’d given him a few more minutes, he’d have been okay, because he was pretty much fine as soon as he got in the ambulance.

So, he told me he was in the hospital, in the emergency room.  I fed the cats because I didn’t know how long I’d be there, and took off.  I got there, got to him, and a doctor came in about twenty minutes later.  She asked some questions, said it looked like Rob was fine, so he could be released, she just wanted to look over a couple more things.  I think two other nurses, one male, one female, came in, as well as someone from the financial department.  And in between these things, guess what happened?

Yep, another seizure!  It only lasted about thirty seconds or so, but still.  I held onto him till it was over.

Yeah, today wasn’t the greatest of days.  ::Sighs::

It hurts so much when a pet is sick 🙁 I will keep Smiley in my prayers!
