Memories, All Alone In The Moonlight . . .

But, what kind of memories does Jason have of hot summer days? I remember going to Friendly’s and having a Conehead sundae every time until I was about ten or eleven. I remember going to Toys R Us and buying a new pair of roller skates. I remember singing on those skates when I was out in the cul-de-sac, dreaming about being famous because of that voice. I remember role playing Legend of Zelda with James. We’d actually made props! We had cardboard swords, shields, paper rubies, the trampoline I had was the raft . . .

Oh, my God!! The couch that we used to have in the living room was me and Tommy Bartell’s pirate ship! I’d forgotten about that! And I remember, I used to have this thing that looked like a sailor hat and I would put it on my talking Big Bird, and pretend that he was my first mate. And then there was the time I got grounded, and had to stay inside for the rest of the day when I was about four or five, and me and Tommy were standing at my front door talking. We were actually talking about me being able to escape, and saying that if he had his dad’s ladder, he could put it up to my window, and I could climb out, and my parents would never know.

I remember running around the living room, listening to Sesame Street records, or Yellow Submarine. I remember spinning around in the living room until I fell down, and the ceiling spun because I was so dizzy. Running around outside in the yard, playing get-the-ball with Mitch and Dennis. Watching Ticket to Ride and loving it so much because the song was good, and it was the scene where the Beatles are skiing and are in the snow. Climbing my favorite climbing tree, and being so proud and exhilarated on the day that I climbed higher than I ever had before. Going on the swings at Sycamore and leaning back, so that my hair cascaded behind me, almost touching the ground. Even injuries are memories. I mean, what kid didn’t skin their knee, and then later pick at the scab, or something? Or show it to someone else and say, “Hey, guess how that happened?” I’m willing to bet if there was even one person, it would be Jason. I mean, how can he not know what paper bag puppets are? How could he have never made one? I still have mine from fourth grade!!
