Theme Entry – Recurring Nightmares
My Childhood Dreams…
When I was a little boy, I had many recurring nightmares. They seem kind of UNfrightening now, as I look back upon some of them, but they terrified me nonetheless.
Dream one :
I would be at Memaw’s house. Often, I would be playing outside on the front porch. The street she lived on was totally deserted. TOTALLY. No one was home, no cars, no people, no anything!
There I would be, playing all by myself on Memaw’s front porch. Suddenly, light purple coyotes come running around the corners, down the street. I am terrified of any wild animal, so the coyotes scare me out of my mind.
On and on, the pack builds and builds. There appear to be thousands of coyotes running toward Memaw’s house!!! And where am I? On the porch! ALONE!!!!
I run inside the house, hoping against hope that some grownup will be there. No such luck. As so often happened when I needed someone grown (and still happens), I couldn’t find one adult.
I’m scared and baffled. Where is everybody? Why are they never ever around when I need them?!!!!! If I had cussed, I would have screamed, “GODDAMNIT!” repeatedly.
So to the windows (always to the windows in my dreams) I go. I look out, and there are now what looks like MILLIONS of coyotes all around the house. They’re scratching and sniffing, and not to release any fragrance! Oh my God, they want IN! They want to EAT ME!!!!
Now, I don’t believe coyotes would try to eat a living human, but as a child, I had no way to know that, or even suppose it. And I started having this dream at the age of maybe four, all the way until I bordered on teen years.
There’s really not much more to this one. I ran around and around the house, looking out windows, and there were coyotes everywhere! EVERYWHERE!!!! And no grownups were there to save me from them.
Check next entry for next dream.
