advice about dogs

for a long time now chewie and i have been kicking around the idea of getting a dog.

we both had dogs growing up and miss having one around.

cats are cool. especially ours.

but lets face it, cats arent dogs.

we went looking at the humane society friday night, just to kill time.

we found a black australian shepherd mixed with some kind of terrier. she had a little white patch on her chest. her name was zelda and she was 12 weeks old. such a sweet girl. they were guestimating she would grow to be about 50 pounds or so. based on the size of her paws, i would have said closer to 65.

anyway, by the time chewie called to see if she was still there saturday morning she was gone.

so we are going to keep looking.

but i thought i would ask you guys for advice since i know some of you are avid dog lovers.

here are our requirements:

  • kid friendly
  • cat friendly
  • not bigger than 50 or 60 pounds
  • preferably a short coat with less shedding for my allergies
  • mild to medium temperment…not something fiesty and rambunctious
  • something that can survive on 4 to 6 walks per week, not a god that needs one EVERY DAY
  • can be a mixed bread, we dont need a purebread
  • preferably one that doesn’t howl like a beagle since we live in a connected townhouse

does anybody know a dog breed that fits this discription? we don’t even really know where to start.

we also aren’t hell bent on getting a puppy. we are open to whatever age dog if its the right fit for our home.

Here’s a great site to learn about different breeds of dogs. Just click the more button and you get a detailed description. Good luck on your search. 😀 http://www.nextdaypets.com/directory/breeds/

I always play around with this one. http://www.iams.com/iams/breed-information.jsp You input what you want, or would like and it spits out breeds for you.

if you’re looking for kid-friendly, i wouldn’t go with a toy breed, some of them can consider small children (or hyper ones) to be threats.

Definatly look in the paper. There are always dogs that are being advertised because they can’t afford them, moving, etc. Then you can see the dog’s environment there and how it would compare with yours. I say this because we bought a dog from a kennel and the poor thing hated men–of course we didn’t know it until we brought it home and had friends over. Can’t wait to hear what you got!

NOT a terrier. You do NOT want a terrier or a beagle or a dashchund, they’re ALL barkers. All dogs need to be walked daily, sadly so you will have to walk your dog every day unless you have a big backyard it can run in. Even little dogs need to be walked! You don’t know howwww manyyy health problems we see because people just carry around their little pocket dogs and don’t walk them!

a good dog is a border collie or a border collie mix, they’re good with children but they do need daily walk and at least some type of play to keep their brain smarts. I don’t know what type of dog you’re looking for per se but I know a good dog is a greyhound, just not many people like the look of them. They don’t walk during the winter because it’s too cold and they’re SO friendly!

I had a husky x lab cross…he loved walks and needed them everyday. The pugs on the other hand love walks but not everyday…you can get pugs crossed with other breeds.

I found Chaya on craigslist. short haired dogs shed alot from my expierience…did you know I have 12 dogs? Just be careful for bully breeds. Only because of Chewy’s son. If you look up “dog breed selector” theres always several sites with quizes. I like to take a few at different sites and see which ones give you the same answer. Mutts in general have some of the best personalities because it gets rid of some of the inbreeding. For me its mostly important for a dog to be smart. I have no use for an untrainable dog I can’t take anywhere. the thing about not wanting to take dogs for walks…maybe you should look into a midsize breed instead of a 50-60 pounder because the bigger they are the more exercise they need. But as someone said tiny breeds are not good for kids all the time..maybe particularly kids into wrestling? Personally I don’t do like..any of the “Russels” not necause they are bad but because they are SOO hyper. I would check your local craigslist because you will find people who are trying to get their pet a home. I mean shelters too of course but its something to look into. If you get an older dog tak

into mind that its probably going to be more scared then a puppy would be and takes longer to adjust. Older dogs are more likely to book it because they just don’t know why they are with you and not with the person who raised them. They however often come knowing how to sit and stay and all those good things. I love crate training because it gives the dog its own space and its nice to havea place to put them away if you have company over or something. If they aren’t used to being put away then if they ever are they can do some serious evil scratching and freaking out behind a door. I just think crates allow for better control in a family. I do it with Dharma and Chaya and the other dogs fight to be allowed to go into the little houses when they aren’t in there. My grandma doesnt opt to do it and Christmas and such is AWFUL because they freak out at the bedroom doors they are put behind..my dogs just take a nap. …i could go on for way to long about this.

No real advice about a specific breed, but try to stay away from any of the working breeds, like collies, cattle dogs, shephards, etc. They’re bred to be super energetic, and do require daily walks or they get destructive. As long as you have a little yard where they can do their business, a more sedentary breed will be golden.

ha. i’ve been without dogs for some time but i used to raise, breed, show, keeshonds. hairy breed, not good for allergies. the best dog i ever had was a golden retriever. actually got her at the animal shelter.. the place was full and the guy was standing out in the parking lot with her, looking to give her to a good home. she was probably a couple years old, so there were concerns about taking onan adult dog. turned out she was housetrained and had some obedience training. she shed, too, but was the only dog who had the full run of the house. she quickly became one of the family. very good with kids, just not with the postman. lol. woof, woof. here’s a link to tell you all the different breeds, Height, weight, temperament and such. http://puppydogweb.com/caninebreeds/index.htm 🙂

I’ve always wanted a pug as they are a)friendly b)cute and c)LAZY! They don’t really love long walks – they’re more comfortable sleeping on the sofa*lol*. I hear they’re not too healthy, though…

I’ve been looking (halfheartedly) for someone to fill Hero’s paw-prints (we didn’t allow her to wear shoes) for a while. Of all the sites I’ve found, puppydogweb, as suggested by MNS, has so far been the best. You can find that and others, though, by just typing “dog breeds” into your search field. I’ve found that the less they shed, the more they yap. Example: chihuahuas vs. labs.

Dharma doesn’t YAP. Chaya does though. Not all little dogs are barkers.

Of cousre, Stash. Every rule has it’s exceptions, and I’m not even sure I meant what I said about yappers to be considered a rule. Just a general observation I’ve made.

Hi my angel. Its been a long time since anyone told you what you mean to this world. You’ve came long way and up is the only way for you. Though we’re separated by 400 miles, we’ve been through a lot together. You are one of the best creations god has put together next to my grandmother and madaya. You’re a great person. I love you for what you’ve overcome, where you going and how you’re gonna get there. I think about you day in and out. Wonderin

Wondering how Javar and Jessica wouldve sounded. But being friends is as good. Whenever I go thru something I need rejuvenation. I think of u and I minnehaha and the evening at your parents house. Two of the best moments I’ve experince. It works everytime. I bounce back and comtinue with my head up. I talk u up all the time. (Not to Maria of course). I just wanted you to know that you are appreciated and loved. Stay beautiful, stay Jess

ooh back to what someone said about pugs they are fairly awesome but they do have the health problems. Puggles are fairly popular though and get rid of that problem and can tend to be a medium/big dog. or a medium/small dog. I’m not sure about their barking tendancies though.

I don’t know which type of dog would fit your requirements, but I sure hope you get a pound dog!! :))
