John planning a Christmas surprise~
‘Tis the season when I write my Christmas stories. So, here’s the beginning of a short story:
John was hoping that his plans for Christmas would rekindled that love that he shared with Louise, his wife of 30 years; and whose spark was almost extinguished. His plan sought to give the gifts of themsevles to each other and thereby re-opening a deep, passionate, longing: to cherish each other’s heart, forever.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Louise still loved John: that was the conclusion that she had arrived at, after much debate with herself. But that thought gave her no abiding joy. John was a good man. He showed that he still cared for her. But she didn’t feel a hunger to wake up and have his face greet her in the morning. He just didn’t thrill her anymore. She thought, ‘maybe it’s my fault that I haven’t sought to arouse him for a very long time.’ As a matter of fact, she had recently arrived at the conclusion: he was one of the dullest person that she knew! And although she was no longer a hot chick, she still turned head. And she desperately desired that her heart would burn for a man, again. She wanted to feel fully alive, again. She would tell John, today: this was the last Christmas that they spend together.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A stunning idea had engulfed his spirit: he would entertain Louise with it, today. He had been working all morning in his home office. Comin’ into the kitchen, he stood agape. His eyes were opened to her beauty. He had been blind all of these years. He exclaimed,
"Darling, you look enchanting!"
She was taken back by his awakening senses. And he’s calling me, darling, what’s with that, she mused? She uttered with little feeling, "Wow. What an outburst of emotion, John. Thanks so much for your observation."
"Your entirely welcome." As he stared at her soft golden hair cascading onto her shoulders, he said, "You look so lovely." He had trouble verbalizing anything else. He never had a silver tongue; or for that matter seldom engaged in romantic gestures or emotional exclamations. However, that would soon change in the future.
On a wild impulse, he walked up to her and took her in his arms. He said, "I got a big surprise in store for you."
Feelings for this man that she had known for more than half of his life were surprisingly springing to life. She thought, "He’s acutally taking the initiative and is holding me!"
She responded to him, "Oh? I’m captivated. I’m all ears."
"Ok. But maybe you’ll wanna sit down. This could come as quite a shock."
"Maybe I’ll just hold onto you tighter, so that I don’t fall from the earth-shaking news."
"Ok. But I warned you."
She smiled, thinking, "This has to be the most excitement that we had had in years."
"What would you say to spending Christmas in Disneyworld?"
He was right: she was shocked. "Huh?" She released his embrace, saying, "Some 20 years ago, when I mentioned ’bout going to Disneyworld, you looked at me like I was nuts, and asked me, ‘you want to relive your childhood?’" She stood there, with confused emotions.
He thought, "Since I have come this far, why stop now?"
"Darling, I know that I have never been a poet or anything like that. Hey, no snickering. But I had taken up reading poetry, lately."
Her mouth hung open. She asked, "Who are you? And what have you done with my husband?"
She had been thinking: just when I feel all hope is lost for us, he wants to sweep me off of my feet.
"Darling, you once told me: ‘open yourself up to new ideas, to new worlds, grow a bit.’ well, princess, I may have been one of the worst princes in the world,’ he then held both of her hands, "but I want to experience a new world with you, now, as we crusie our way to Disneyworld."
"Cruise, John?"
He pulled out of his pocket two tickets. "I was feeling spontaneous yesterday. SoI stopped by the travel agency and booked two seats on the Disney Princess cruiser."
She didn’t know what to do: laugh or cry. "John, I would asked you if you are having an affair with another women, but I know that that is preposterous. You really got my head spinning, John. What’s got into you?"
"Well…I found the Lord."
Another shock to her system. "Are you saying that you have become one of those fanatics who wants to talk about Jesus all the day long?"
He smiled, saying, "I came to know that when I please you, I’ll pleasing the Lord. And I just want to make you happy."
For some inexplicable reason, jealousy swept her being. Has she lost her husband to God? "So, are you most interested in pleasing your Lord, or seeing me happy…wait a minute. I got another question. If you didn’t find the Lord: would you be acting like you are now or proposing going on cruises to Disney?’
The wild-eyed look in his wife’s eyes was a bit scary to him. He calmly said, "Probably not."
"So, I guess that it comes back to the question: are you just trying to please your Lord?" She was shouting now. Why? Shouldn’t she be happy that he could change his ways? That he actually wanted to make her feel treasured and loved? Was her crazy nature merely focuing on some imaginative comeptition between her and his Lord? She sat down, put her head on the table and started sobbing.
He immediately went to her and gently caressed her hand, saying, "Sweetheart, I love you. I just want us to be happy together."
She look up at those love-filled eyes and threw her arms around him.
After she stopped sobbing, he said, "I understand that all of this is a lot to take in, all at once. Take some time and think about all that I have said, ok?"
She nodded her head up and down and allowed him to carrry her to bed, to rest….
It’s always so nice to read your Christmas stories, Bri. I know I really enjoyed the past ones and this one, too, I am sure. This first chapter is already so sweet in itself. Thanks for the treat.
