In need of opinions

Calling all novelists, musicians, computer people/programmers, artists, painters, people who work with a needle and thread, poets, blog writers, photographers, crafty types and anyone else who wants to weigh in on this. Moral and ethical debate. If someone came to you and handed you someone else’s work and asked you to tweak it, add things to it, change the colour or shape, etc and send it out into the world for no monetary value and no way to ever tell whose work was whose, would you do it?

Hi, you left a note on my diary about a month ago and for some reason I never saw it until now. Thanks for stopping by my diary. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed Half-Broke Horses and Glass Castle. I’m looking forward to reading them!

Sorry this took me so long to answer! I think I would consider it if I had a way of knowing who the artist was. If it was someone who was struggling to make a living from their creativity, then there is no way that I would do it. If, however, they just randomly did it for fun, probably. If I didn’t know who originally did it & couldn’t know their situation, then no!

no. It is rude to the original author. Why not do it afresh if you cannot tell what it was in the first place. xxx

How did i miss this? *kicks OD* Were they trying to claim the re.edited version as their own? Or as yours? or.. ? hrm. anyway.. no. i’d give the original creator his/her due credit.

What is up with OD lately? These ads are taking over the entire screen and I couldn’t even read this without highlighting..gah! Anyways..to be honest this is a tough question to answer. I mean if you’ve changed the original piece so much that it’s unrecognizable from the first, would I? I mean we could be talking about so many different mediums here. I feel like this is a trick question. your

initial response is to say, “no I wouldn’t”, but let’s be honest..we do this every day in some shape or form. For example when I take a photograph of something, it’s often of an object or scene that I did not create myself but am purely manipulating it’s appearance or documenting it into another form. So I think it would depend on what it is exactly, specifically that we’re talking about.

And if I were outright asked if anyone else were owed credit, than I would probably be more likely to divulge that. A lot has to do with the intent behind what you’re “creating” as well..
