In the annals of publishing, no rejections stand out more vividly than those endured by George Orwell for his novel Animal Farm. In a cool rejection letter, Faber editor T.S. Eliot told Orwell that although the satiric fable had certain virtuies, "I reject to say that it does not appear to me possible as a publishing venture." Eliot was not alone in his assessment. After Animal Farm was turned down by three more English editors, Orwell made preparations to publish it himself. Before he could do so, however, the novel was accepted by Secker & Warburg, which had earlier published Orwell’s much-rejected Homage to Catalonia. The phenomenal success of Animal Farm and its follow-up, 1984, put Secker & Warburg on the map. "Animal Farm made me a publisher," said Frederic Warburg.
After The Bridges of Madison County came out of nowhere (Iowa, actually) to become a blockbuster hit, St. Martin’s editor Boy Wyatt confessed that if Robert James Waller’s manuscript had landed on his desk, he would have returned it. His reasons? "Too short. Not enough audience appeal. It didn’t fit any category and it could be compared to anything." A few years later The Christmas Box– which enjoyed such enormous success as a self-published title, then on Simon & Schuster’s list– was initially turned down by dozens of publishers because it was, among other things, "uncategorizable."
Category is a very important concept in publising. Exactly what does that mean? Visit any bookstore, a large on especially, and note the headings under which books are shelved. If you can easily determine where your book would be placed, it fits into an existing category. If you can’t, you have a problem, as least as far as publishers and booksellers are concerned. Earlier we discussed the confusion of publishers as they tried to categorize Animal Farm. After George Orwell’s novel was published, this proved to be a problem for booksellers are well, leading its author to tour London bookstores, moving his book from the children’s section to one for adults.

Such a form as Socrates and Glaucon, in the ninth book of the Republic, allude to in their discussion of the perfect city. Glaucon, the doubter, says: "But the city whose
