For my own use. I FINALLY learned out to do a simple cable knit on the knitting board. But, I can’t do it without the instructions right in front of me. I get all confused on which way to twist the stitches. Here’s my pattern.

Plan to cast on 14 pegs.   Before putting any yarn on the pegs AT ALL, place 8 safety pins (or peg markers of something or the other) on pegs 4 through 11 (optional, but it really helps me keep straight which loops I’ll be moving). It is important to follow the order that is listed below. Do NOT deviate or you will get a mess instead of a cable. When "picking up" stitches, put point of tool through top of loop and pull it off of the peg, then pick up the next stitch in the same matter. Be careful not to twist the loop when putting it on its new peg.

  • Row 1
    • RIB stitch (weave yarn from peg 1 to 3 then every other and knit over)
  • Row 2
    • RIB stitch
  • Row 3
    • Pick up stitch 8 then 9 on one tool (left hand) and then stitch 11 then 10 on another tool (right hand)
      • LEFT HAND
        • Put stitch 9 on peg 11
        • Put stitch 8 on peg 10
      • RIGHT HAND
        • Put stitch 10 on peg 8
        • Put stitch 11 on peg 9
    • Pick up stitch 4 then 5 on one tool (left hand) and then stitch 7 then 6 on another tool (right hand)
      • LEFT HAND
        • Put stitch 5 on peg 7
        • Put stitch 4 on peg 6
      • RIGHT HAND
        • Put stitch 6 on peg 4
        • Put stitch 7 on peg 5
    • Weave over pegs in RIB Stitch (knit over)
  • Row 4
    • RIB stitch
  • Row 5
    • Pick up stitch 6 then 7 on one tool (left hand) and then stitch 9 then 8 on another tool (right hand)
      • RIGHT HAND
        • Put stitch 8 on peg 6
        • Put stitch 9 on peg 7
      • LEFT HAND
        • Put stitch 7 on peg 9
        • Put stitch 6 on peg 8
    • Weave over pegs in RIB stitch (knit over)
  • Row 6
    • RIB stitch

Repeat Rows 3 through 6 until desired scarf length is reached. Then add one more final row of RIB stitch. Bind off. TADAA!
ONLY DO THE "TWISTING STITCH" ON THE BOTTOM (OR FRONT) BOARD. THE "BACK" OF THE SCARF WILL BE REGULAR.

This twisted rope is best done with solid color yarn of a light color. You can’t see the detail as well on darker/multi-colored yarn. Also, used worsted weight or bulky yarn. Right now, I’m making a white scarf out of Red Heart Super Savers 4-ply worsted weight (I think that’s the style) yarn. It’s turning out lovely. Not enough done for a photo yet. It’s also taking me twice as long to do this scarf as a regular one because I have to stop and move stitches around. But, I think  it’ll be worth it in the end!
