building

I’ve built myself a foundation made of
much more stable stuff
than dreams, failed promises
and misplaced trust.

I sat for hours and poured concrete
rubbed my hands raw pounding nails
and hewing timber –
not to cage you but to
give you a suitable place
to call home.

I poured my blood, my sweat, my tears
into the telling
and was repaid with sunshine, laughter and intent.

I don’t have to wait idly for a tidal wave to
sweep me out to see and
send me spinning.

I have you right where I want you
and you don’t need anything from me
but me.
Couch cuddles and midnight snuggles
and a place to come home to
nightly.
