comfort and serenity
I’ve spent the better part of the last week in a plague-coma. Both Devon and I came down with severe colds – they just don’t seem to be the same ones. Hers is mainly in her head and sinuses, mine is a chest cold. I had Friday off anyway, so we spent that and most of the weekend holed up in our apartment and trying to get better. We did venture out for one very important errand, however – due to the sales going on for the Super Bowl, we purchased our very own 40′ hi-def flat screen tv for the living room. It was on sale, and I think we got a great deal for it. We also went to Walmart and got a blu ray player that streams netflix right onto our tv. So now we have an endless supply of things we can watch all at the press of a button. We’re still working on adjusting the picture and the sound – our next purchase will be some kind of home theatre system because it sounds a little tinny no matter what we do, but we can definitely live with it. For the rest of the weekend, we switched out or cable DVR box to a hi-def one, and rescheduled all of our recordings and watched movies to our hearts content. All while hacking up a lung, curled up on the couch and cuddling like two invalids should be. As a result we got out of all of our weekend plans, even the ones we wanted to do, and one that we didn’t – helping Leighann move to their new house. We did miss Toni’s super bowl party though, and that was a bummer.
We have secured a hall for the wedding reception on the Island at the historical society which is pretty much right across the street from the house where the ceremony is taking place. It’s a beautiful, historical building on the Island with hard wood floors and a stage, and it will be perfect, which saves us the expense of renting a tent and dance floor. Devon was dubious at first, but quickly warmed to the idea when she was able to look up pictures online. Dad’s side of the family, where the wedding is going to actually take place, is particularly excited for the big event. We’ve been told over and over again that they will do anything they can to accomidate our wishes, down to what kind of food we want to eat and serve. Her step mother used to be in the catering business, and she’s taking care of the food. We’re seriously considering a surf and turf with lobster and steak, since we can get such a good deal on the Lobster through dad’s connections on the Island. Since it will be such a small wedding anyway, with hopefully under 40 people, it won’t be that big of a deal. We still need to figure out the music situation and whether or not we are getting a dj, figure out the ceremony specifics, coordinate the airfare and travel for the people from here and across-country who are going and figure out the specific costs involved, but our wedding fund is steadily growing, and we’re planning things carefully – and one step at a time. I can hardly contain my excitement, however, and the next few months will be a beautiful adventure.
The night before last, Devon and I shared a special moment that seemed like nothing significant at the time I did it, but its something Devon swears she will never forget. It was the middle of the night, probably about 3 o’clock. I had woken up needing a drink, or to cough or something – for the last week, sleeping through the night has been an impossibility for either of us. I rolled over, and propped myself up on my arm slightly, just to look at her. Then I pulled her close and kissed her on the cheek, then layed back down and went back to sleep. She was apparently awake for that whole incident and feeling shakey due to cold medicine, etc – and she said it meant the world to her. That she had never felt so safe, and so at home and loved and protected. I guess our subconcious communicates, even when we are unaware of it and I was able to be there for her without even realizing she needed me. It was a beautiful moment that brought tears to both of our eyes later on, and now it’s stuck in our memory.
Here’s hoping to the start of feeling better, and the continuation of a wonderful, beautiful reality that my life has truly become.
