Student arrested for essay’s imaginary violence

CARY, Illinois (AP) — A high school senior was arrested after writing that “it would be funny” to dream about opening fire in a building and having sex with the dead victims, authorities said.

Another passage in the essay advised his teacher at Cary-Grove High School: “don’t be surprised on inspiring the first CG shooting,” according to a criminal complaint filed this week.

Allen Lee, 18, faces two disorderly conduct charges over the creative-writing assignment, which he was given on Monday in English class at the northern Illinois school.

Students were told to “write whatever comes to your mind. Do not judge or censor what you are writing,” according to a copy of the assignment.

According to the complaint, Lee’s essay reads in part, “Blood, sex and booze. Drugs, drugs, drugs are fun. Stab, stab, stab, stab, stab, s…t…a…b…puke. So I had this dream last night where I went into a building, pulled out two P90s and started shooting everyone, then had sex with the dead bodies. Well, not really, but it would be funny if I did.”

Officials described the essay as disturbing and inappropriate.

Lee said he was just following the directions.

“In creative writing, you’re told to exaggerate,” Lee said. “It was supposed to be just junk. … There definitely is violent content, but they’re taking it out of context and making it something it isn’t.”

Lee was moved to an off-campus learning program, and the district was evaluating a punishment, schools spokesman Jeff Puma said.

“It wasn’t just violent or foul language,” Puma said. “It went beyond that.”

The teenager’s father, Albert Lee, has defended his son as a straight-A student who was just following instructions and contends the school overreacted. But he has also said he understands that the situation arose in the week after a Virginia Tech student gunned down 32 people before committing suicide.

Defense attorney Dane Loizzo said Allen Lee has never been disciplined in school and signed Marine enlistment papers last week.

A conviction could bring up to 30 days in jail and a maximum $1,500 fine.

Thirty days in jail? That’s it? holy crap…what is this world comming to? I think that this kid should be doing hard time and then doing a gazillion hours of community service in a morgue (sp) where dead people are dieing to get into to. And also pay the fine. And then maybe people will think twice about doing stupid things like that.

Okay, so I’m not really clear what your opinion is of this… are you agreeing or disagreeing? I’m glad you posted a snippet, because until now I hadn’t seen any specifics. Now that I have, I think the arrest was even more unwarranted. I had thought he made it sound believable or something, but what little I just read makes me think that its tone was not as unhinged as some articleshave made it out to be. (Definitely not a manifesto or anything.) Granted, I’ve only seen a snippet of it, but still, if this is the best evidence they could offer… I’ve seen far more disturbing pieces of fiction. Published fiction, no less. (I’m not counting his essay as being “published”.) *sigh*

If they actually send him to jail for writing something that was likely fiction, I sense an appeal to the Surpremes coming in the near future. Can someone say 1st ammendment right to free speech? This will be squashed almost immediately if appealed. Later,

hmm… I’m not sure what to say. In all honesty, I think this has been completely blown out of proportion. I understand where it’s coming from, but I think this assignment is more a result of poor taste (in regards to the timing of it) than any sign of the kid causing any violent acts. I mean, I look back on some of the things I wrote in highschool, and I didn’t mean most of them….

Some of the things I wrote were really morbid and sadistic but it wasn’t a reflection on the liklihood of me killing everyone in the school: it was just an outlet. If they’re going to chuck a shit about this, then how is any creative writer going to develop their craft freely. I mean geez, go lock up all the horror / crime writers of the world.

Besides, they were stupid enough to ask for an “uncensored” piece. I think they were setting them up for this kind of thing. xo

Ohhh, this just makes me want to *grrrr*! I was a straight A student in HS (well, okay, not PE) and I wrote FAR worse things than that! The only difference is that I put on the ‘happy’ face for my teachers and parents… which eventually led to a breakdown. I hope this writer ends up with a book deal out of this, if only to teach others to vent their dark side on paper and not people! ~Shady

I heard about Reina’s burglarly. Seems to be a trend. Glad I’m not a celebrity. Yea I know there are playoffs in the lower divisions. I’m a Leicester fan, remember. But at least you have to be in the top 6 (of 20) to qualify. It seems far less egregious than being 13th or 15th of 30. And at least the top two teams automatically guaranteed promotion.

random noter: for what it’s worth, he wrote that the teacher would be responsible for his impending mass murder of fellow classmates (heavily implied is no different and even if it were, does anyone really want to give the benefit of the doubt these days?), and freedom of speech does not mean you can threaten to kill people with impunity, a death threat against a teacher and/or fellow students isa crime, which is reasonable as people shouldn’t have to live in fear because of death threats, even if that weren’t the case, in a post Columbine/Virginia Tech/(fill in own mass shooting at a school/workplace), a person has to be aware of the mindset of society and be a little respectful of that, if not, at least good judgement about what writing certain things is likely to do in terms of reaction, he isn’t a hero of free speech by the by, he’s a person that was writing about murdering his classmates (and having sex with their dead bodies) only a few days after the Virginia Tech mass murder, if nothing else, being punished should do wonders for his lack of common sense and sensitivity

….um, just no. This kid may be no hero, but after seeing a LOCAL school go into a panic and press criminal charges because someone from states away threatened to attack the place… and was QUADROPOLEGIC with NO WAY TO CARRY IT OUT AT ALL…. the school’s behavior sickens me far more then the writing EVER could.

The basic question is: why would you assign this to a creative writing class if you weren’t prepared to read anything disturbing?
