Construction Quote

Dear Diary:
We are meeting with the contractor tonight about the quote for redoing the room in the basement so E can move her room there. He said that bottom line is $10,000 for what we want done. I had a quote a couple of years ago for less work and it was $15,000 so this is a good quote.

L is concerned about taking out a pension loan to do this work. We have almost no debt to speak of. My truck will be paid off in August and we have our mortgage and our monthly bills. That’s it!  I’m even thinking about taking out $15,000 and having the house painted as well since it is in desperate need of a paint job. I explained to L that we need to start putting money into the house as we have lived there for 11 years and have not done much to it. This year we have already put $3,000 into electrical work.

We still have money left in the bank and that will cover the carpeting for E’s room since the contractor is not doing that. She may need new furniture and her old room needs to be painted and have the wallpaper removed so G can move in to it. $15,000 over 4 years is about $350 per month on a loan. Definitely manageable for us to do and with the pension loan it will come directly out of my paycheck at $175 per pay check (I’m paid every two weeks).

I am ready to do it. I just have to convince L.  I know, I owe you before pictures of the room. I’ll do that tonight!

That seems like a large amount of money, but you’re investing in your home. Some day when you go to sell, I’m sure you’ll recover teh cost!

It is a big chunk of money but you’re spending it to improve your home. The cost will pay off. You’re right though… If you’ve lived there 11 years and have barely done work, it probably needs some now. And you sound to be in a spot to do it safely with no debt to speak of. Good luck convincing L.

Seems like you have a good plan all worked out.
