Short Story – Adam (part 2)

*** ADAM – Part 2 ***
Captain Conrad and Adam spent their time preparing for the orbit insertion. There was no reason to wake any of the others yet since the plan was for no one to be woken until the ship had landed on Eden. The ship’s computers and Adam were designed to handle everything without the need for human intervention, except in an emergency.
 
Since there was not a lot for Jackie to do, she spent much of her time scanning the ship’s computer systems to determine what had happened. She did find a computer log entry from three days prior to her awakening that confirmed what Adam had said. She read it several times.
 
220518 – 03:17:25 – Entered Epsilon solar system. Speed decreased to 1/3 cruising.

220518 – 04:48:59 – Entered asteroid field. Shields deployed.
Environmental: normal

Shields:      Malfunction – left pod deflector

220518 – 04:53:02 – Asteroid strike – left pod – electrical failure in stasis chamber one.

There it was, the exact date and time of the failure of the chamber electrical system. “They died in their sleep at least and didn’t suffer,” Jackie thought.
 
She continued scanning the log entries to see if there was anything else that stood out and they all seemed like normal entries. Even Adam’s activation seemed normal.
 
220518 – 06:00:00 – Adam activated. Preparation for orbital insertion started.

Still something tugged at her though she could not put her finger on it. Her mind had been distracted by what she was going to tell the other women when they awoke. “Sorry, all the men are dead but the replicant will be happy to impregnate you so our species can be fruitful and multiply.”

Captain Conrad continued to try and fill her time. The hours on the bridge were lonely as Adam worked about the ship with his pre-programmed preparations. The mission plans for after they had landed needed to be reformulated now that half of the crew was not there to fulfill their objectives. She reworked shifts and assignments to try and cover all of the necessary work that needed to be done. Much of it fell on Adam since he required very little sleep time to recharge. He would be crucial in so many ways if this mission were to succeed.
 
It was then that the thought of sleeping with him struck her like a lightning bolt. There was no way she was going to have sex with a robot. The thought repulsed her. She needed to get away from these plans and think about something else. She needed to visit the men’s chamber.
 
She walked in with the flashlight beam searching around in the darkness until it found the coffin… “stasis bed!” She corrected herself. Her once future husband remained in the same position as she last saw him. She pressed her head to the glass cover and closed her eyes thinking of what might have been.
Without opening her eyes she felt a presence behind her. She turned and was face to face with Adam, her flashlight beam illuminating his face in horror style shooting upward from below his chin.
 
“Jackie” Her name came off his lips sweetly, “I have completed all of my assignments in preparation for landing. I think now would be a good time for us to spend together.”
 
“What are you talking about?”
 
“You know what I am talking about. One of the mission objectives is for all of the women to be impregnated. Now would be a good time to impregnate you. I have been monitoring your temperature and cycle and you are fertile.” His hand came up to her cheek to gently stroke it.
 
“Get your hands off me!” Slapping his hand, she knocked it away from her face.
 
He glared at her with what looked to be anger. His hands came up and he grabbed her arms to hold her in place while his lips came to meet her. She responded by kicking him between the legs, an instinct from her survival training. In a second she was thrown like a rag doll across the floor, the far wall the only thing stopping her from going further.
 
“I will fulfill my objective!” his words came out in anger taking her by surprise since she didn’t think he was capable of it.
 
She reached up the wall to grasp something to help pull her up. Her hand found a loose panel on the wall and the cover tore off in her hands as she stood. She looked at it and noticed it was an electrical conduit cover. She shone the light inside the opening to notice the wires had been damaged… torn apart. Her eyes darted around to Adam who was now closing in on her, “You did this! You killed them all!”
 
“This was the objective all along. Dr. Alvarez’ wanted to leave a legacy and this was it. All of the children of Eden will be his children.” He grabbed her again and threw her to the floor before jumping on top of her and pulling her pants from her waist.
 
“I won’t be a part of this!” She backhanded the flashlight across his face knocking him off of her.
 
Adam could feel the fluids leaking from where she had damaged his face. It had become clear that she was too dangerous and would never let him fulfill his objective. He had to terminate her. He stood up and held out a hand to her, “Yes, of course. I am sorry for my programming.”
 
For a long moment she regarded him before lifting herself from the floor, ignoring his outstretched hand, “Report to your recharging station and remain there. That is an order!” She barked out as the captain.
 
“As you wish,” In a flash his hand shot up and took her face in them, with a quick jerk her head snapped to the side with an audible cracking of the bones in her neck.
 
She slumped to the floor in a mass. Regarding her for a moment he then walked to the electrical panel and repaired the wires. The lights of the room came on and he picked up Captain Conrad in his arms and placed her in Captain Jennings bed. He arranged them to appear as if they had been sleeping together when the accident occurred.
 
He returned to the electrical panel and made sure that it was tightly sealed to cover the damage he had caused again.

The lights flickered on in the women’s stasis chamber. The room was circular and held fifty individual chambers, forty nine sleeping beauties slept awaiting their Prince Charming.
 
Maria Martinez looked up at the shadowy figure standing over her, her mind still fuzzy from the sleep, “Have we arrived at Eden?”
 
“Yes, but there has been an accident Ms. Martinez,” He responded stoically knowing that his mission objectives would be completed this time.
