Renovation Woes
So there is starting to be a light at the end of the tunnel for our wonderful upstairs bathroom renovation. The initial budget was approximately $1500, we’ve probably tripled that, I’m scared to add up all the receipts that we have getting piled up in the glove box of our new truck.
So the inital plan was to remove all the walls, the floor, bathtub, and toilet, and just replace all of that. When we opened the walls we had a huge suprise. The list grew to fixing the electrical, reinforcing the stairs since they had no support, fixing the plumbing, reinforcing the floor since under the toilet had no supports, which is the reason why our toilet was starting to go through the floor. The floor ended up having 4 subfloors as well as 3 layers of drywall, so this reno has taken already, 5 days longer then it should have, and it still isn’t completely done. The list of problems that we found in that room alone kept growing and growing, and thankfully it’s all cosmetic things left. I think one of the things that scared me the most was there was electrical about |——-| that close to the water pipe for our shower, Shawn was actually getting shocked while touching the pipe.
My dad laid the tiles for our flooring yesterday, and added the grout today. Tomorrow he’ll be sealing the floor, and then the next step would be to do the tiles around the tub up. I painted the ceiling as well as the green drywall on our walls. It took 2 coats of primer as well as so far, 1 coat of paint, might need another coat, will have to check when we get a light in there to see the corners and whether or not it needs more or if it’s just the shadows from where the stairs are in our shower. The whole bathroom should be done by early next week, thank heavens. I love my parents and everything, but I want my bed, I’m so over sleeping on the couch.
Our plan for this house was to renovate most of the rooms, because of the surprises we found in the walls with the electrical we’re only opening the walls for the bathroom downstairs, and we’ll replace the cupboard doors in our kitchen. How we see it is, having 2 full brand new bathrooms and new cupboard doors will add about $25k to the value, putting the house at about $160k, which we want to sell, depending on the market that is, is $150k.
Next thing on the agenda….our housemates….mice. Shawn and I feel so dirty because we’ve had mice living with us and we had no clue what so ever. The only reason why we knew we had them is because I seen a little F****r just over two weeks ago and so far, we’ve got 6 little bastards. Once the spring comes, we’ll be walking around the house looking or ways on how they can get in, and hopefully we’ll be able to find out where they are coming in from.
