Theme of the Week: How Has the Net influenced me

Gentle Hearts!

Here is my chance to write about the Theme of the Week here at Opendiary.

It is a good topic, too.

How Has the Net Influenced Your Life

My brother, John went on-line since we bought him his first computer in 1988! He hogged the whole web to himself! He was afraid that I would stay on long and that I just didn’t understand how to protect myself on-line! I only used the computer off line for typing my poetry, using my multi-media Bible, making lists of all my books and for organizing all my videos and music CD’s.

One day I got angry! I told my brother he ‘must’ teach me how to go on-line! He thought about it for a good portion of the day, and finally he taught me how to go on-line. I was flabbergasted! I was thrilled! My hands shook as I connected to the Net! The first thing I did was check all the on-line periodicals! I went to http://www.redbook.com and then I just browsed the Net.

A week later I decided I wanted to get myself an e-mail account! Why shouldn’t I? Everyone was on the Net.

What made me so different? I was infuriated by the fact that my brother gave his wife an account with Yahoo first! Hmmmmmmmmmm. She was his girlfirend at the time and we were both on-line and he opened an account for her.

I gave him a sour look, but then he opened one…my first official e-mail for me! I was thrilled!

Well I had an e-mail account, but who would e-mail me?

I had no Net friends yet and noone from my small circle of friends had internet access yet. I looked in the Yahoo Pen-pal adds and added my name and interests.

Here I was, a shy, reserved, and intellectual lady making my first official personal add! Hmmmmmmmm?

To my surprise I received my first e-mail from this gentleman from Japan! He is an ameture photographer from Hiroshima! He is an elderly man but soon we became pen-pals. We wrote each other every day. We sent each other pictures and he sent me oriental drawings and pictures of himself.

About a month later, I saw that Yahoo offered the Yahoo Pager. I thought it would be fun to be able to chat with a few people. I downloaded the pager and in about a day I began to chat with Itsuki, my Japanese friend! Back in 1997 I only had 2 on-line friends.

Then I decided to open my first Yahoo Poetry Club, “CyberPoet’s Niche”. It was a success! I convinced and made a poet out of Itsuki and he joined my club. I had 8 original poetry friends and now I have 50.

I joined 18 Yahoo Clubs and soon made lots of Net friends. I was getting to be a very popular lady!

😀

I metamorphed from a shy, reserved woman to a social butterfly in less than 7 months! With the downloading of ICQ I became more popular! Now I have 49 friends (mostly male) friends on ICQ, 50 Net friends on Yahoo Messenger, 10 friends on AOL Messenger, and Alex on MSN Messenger.
