No Wonder I Sleep So Much
The summer accountability group started on Tuesday this week. It consists of 14 weeks of meeting goals that we have set for ourselves the first night. The three goals that I chose for myself are as follows:
1) Go to bed no later than 11:00 p.m. and be up no later that 7:00 a.m. at least 5 days a week.
~While for a lot of people this isn’t (why the EFF does the spell check on OD mark conjugated words as mispelled???) a problem, for me getting up early has always been something that I’ve struggled with. I’m not a morning person, and not having a job doesn’t help the situation any. If anything it amplifies the problem because I have been staying up way later and sleeping way later. Granted I usually only sleep the allotted 8 hours, but when you stay up until 3:00 in the morning that means you aren’t getting up until 11:00 in the morning. SOOO I’m working on going to bed at a decent time and getting up early. So far so good, although I still feel in a daize almost 2 hours after having been up. I’m hoping that feeling goes away as I become accustomed to getting up early.
2) Eat breakfast at least 5 days a week.
~Again this is problem something that most people don’t have a problem with. For me though, I’m a breakfast skipper. And when you are trying to get healthy and lose weight, breakfast is essential to being on the right track.
Let’s pause for a short rant shall we? This morning I went in the kitchen to figure out what I was going to make for breakfast. We are out of bread, so toast was out of the running. I didn’t feel like making eggs, and we don’t have any cereal right now either. Then I remembered that we had bought a couple of canisters of oatmeal, so oatmeal it would be. I open the cupbard to find that one whole canister was gone. WTH? It was just there yesterday. Unopened. Low and behold I check the trash and there is the empty canister. My glutton of a husband made the WHOLE EFFING canister before he left for work this morning. THIRTEEN servings!!! And oatmeal EXPANDS!!! It is extremely filling with even just one or two normal servings. BUT NO!!! Leave it to Jacob to blow a whole EFFING canister of oatmeal at once. Some days I really just want to knock him out!!!
And now we return to our entry.
3) Work out for no less than 30 minutes 5 days a week.
~I have yet to start this. Which means that I only have one other day to miss this week. Which mean that I HAVE to do something today in the form of a workout. *sigh* Looks like I’ll be going down to the gym today. Or maybe I’ll find a workout on sparkpeople to do here in the apartment. Rosie said that she wanted to start working out during her lunch, so I was going to take advantage of having a workout partner. Yesterday she wasn’t up to working out though, so I put it off until another day myself. Problem is that I don’t have a choice to continue putting it off since I am a part of the accountability group and all. What did I get myself into? A GOOD THING that’s what!
Oh yeah… and in addition to working out, I have to also make sure to drink the alotted 64 ounces of water each day.
So here’s how it works. Each time I go to a meeting I get a point. I will also get a point for each goal that I succesfully meet each week. Christy is putting us on teams, and the team with the most points at the end of the 14 weeks is going to get some sort of gift certificate such as a day pass to a spa.
Now that I’m getting up earlier in the day, I’m at a loss for things to do. I’d love to take a nap, but I think it defeats the purpose of getting up earlier. What? Did you say go work out? Oh… well yeah I suppose I could do that. Maybe after Gina drops off the shoes that I left at her house the other day. But after I work out, what shall I do? Clean. PSHAW! I loathe cleaning, and while this is a time that I’m making a lot of changes in my life, that is one that I’m not planning on tackling just yet. Our place isn’t a mess per se (other than the bedroom that is). It’s just not Martha Stewart perfect either. There’s only so much job searching I can do throughout the day. Trust me, I check the job posting frequently throughout the day. I do know that I need a job like no other right now. Panic is starting to set in, escpecially with this rent increase that goes into effect with this month’s rent. Makes me sick to my stomach thinking about it.
Maybe I’ll finish my book today, and work on my reading for Bible study next week. Reading when you are already drowsy isn’t usually a good idea though. Maybe I’ll just sit and think about all the different things that I could do to pass the time while in the meantime the time is passing me right by. Sounds like a plan to me. Maybe I’ll just go take a nap. =)
Getting 8 hours of sleep if possible and keeping reasonable hours are worthy goals, but why force specific times if you don’t have a workplace to go to? Leave some wiggle room. It’s good to eat breakfast. Try various cold cereals that take no time to make, or peanut butter on whole wheat or other quick and easy choices. Try to work out for 30 minutes three days a week. When that becomes a routine,add a day. BTW: Three 10 minute walks equals 30 minutes of exercise. And there’s no “allotted” amount of water you should drink! Drink enough to stay comfortably hydrated. What I’m saying here is that it’s GOOD to want to be be more fit and feel healthier, but trying to be a Drill Sergeant and setting absolute times and numbers is setting yourself up for failure. And don’t forget to praise yourself for each success.

RYN: I get an icky feeling all over when I hear “accountability” group. Accountable to whom? In a job, you’re accountable to managers/customers, etc. In your private life, you’re accountable to YOU. But if specific times and dates help, use them.

RYN: I would never join an accountability group, since I’d need to be accountable to them! If you’re planning to backpack through 21 miles of wilderness, you WOULD have to train!
