Our Jubilee weekend and a trip to the theatre

June has been quite a month so far. The weekend before last was the Queen’s Jubilee. The river pageant was actually on my younger son’s birthday. Last year Will and Kate married on my daughter’s so I am wondering what they have planned for my elder son’s next year!

We thought the river pageant was amazing. All of those boats coming down the Thames. I would have loved to have been there but I expect we got a much better view on TV. I couldn’t believe that the Queen and Duke stood up for almost 4 hours. I don’t think I could have done it and I am more than 20 years younger than her. As is turned out the Duke became ill the next day so perhaps it wasn’t a  good idea. Why didn’t they sit down on the seats provided?

The following day Hubby and I went to the Steam and Vintage Fair in Abergavenny. There were Jubilee events in the village but we love this fair and didn’t want to miss it. I love steam enginges

and there were classic cars too, including this American beauty.

There was a great plant stall where I found lots of bargains although it’s been too wet since to put them in the garden yet.

When we got home we watched the Jubilee concert until it was time to drive to the top of the hill behind our house from where we could watch them light the local beacon. It was a magical evening. The moon was sitting low above the hill and looked enormous. We stopped in a quiet layby and waited. The moon waas right above the beacon when they lit it. We watched it for a few minutes and then they set the fireworks off. We arrived home just in time to see the Queen light the final beacon on TV.

It was my birthday 3 weeks ago and to celebrate Hubby and I went to the Malvern Theatre to see Ladies in Lavendar with Hayley Mills. I have loved Hayley since I was a teenager but had never seen her on stage before. It was a great play, very moving. Afterwards I went to the stage door to see if I could catch a glimpse of Hayley. A man there told me he had just been told the whole cast were in the foyer. He was going in so I followed. I waited a while as I didn’t want to be too intrusive. Eventually other people began approaching the cast so I went up to the leading young man and asked for his autograph. He was really lovely and chatted with me, not just about himself, but about the theatre and where I had travelled from. Then I saw my chance and went up to Hayley to ask for her autograph. She signed my programme and gave me a sweet smile but the lady next to me was dominating the conversation and I couldn’t get a word in. I waited and then Hayley began to thank us and was obviously ready to move on. It was now or never. I took the plunge and told her I had been following her since I was 14 and my children grew up on Pollyanna and I wanted to thank her. She looked at me and said ‘Oh thank you so much.’ What a wonderful birthday treat!
