Father’s Day, house renovations and solar panels.
This coming Sunday being Father’s Day, Melissa is coming home Sunday night. Then we’re all heading to Melbourne for a couple of days, and on Tuesday morning Evan comes home. It will be nice being all together, even if it’s only for 2 days. On Monday Melissa has booked a meal out at a comedy club in Melbourne for the 3 of us. I’m sure we’ll have a great time. Then Evan flies in early Tuesday morning. We’ll all spend the day doing something, and Melissa flies home to Sydney late Tuesday night, leaving us to drive home and Evan to catch up on some sleep. A busy couple of days.
Today’s newspaper informed us that we could be in for flooding because of the recent rains. It goes from one extreme to the next. Now the dams will have too much water. We live near the Murray River, and it hasn’t flooded in a long time. Lucky for us any floods won’t affect us. Hopefully it won’t flood at all.
Evan has been in Edinburgh recording interviews with some of the comedians from the fringe festival. It will be interesting to listen to what he’s got. I think he’s going to do a podcast from Melbourne with all the recordings. Hope I can listen to it on the net. I couldn’t the last time he did one.
We’re still in the middle of renovating the house. All the windows are being replaced with aluminium ones, as husband can no longer do maintenance things around the house, and the window frames needed repairing and painting. So I decided it was better to replace the wooden ones. Then a guy came around who installs solar panels on the roof. I’ve always wanted them as we have so much sunshine, it makes perfect sense to harness it. Our state government subsidises the cost, so we’ve decided to have that done too. I don’t know why it isn’t automatic for new houses that are built to have solar panels.
So that’s what’s happening in my little part of the universe. We won’t have much spare cash after paying for everything, but I’ll be happy when it’s all done.
Husband meanwhile has been job searching in compliance with the insurance company instructions. Not much hope anyone will want him though and he’s not really thinking he will get one. Age is against him for a start, never mind his injured back.
I suddenly remembered early in the week that our termite spraying was about due to be done. When I checked the certificate it was actually 5 months over. Another bill! However, when we rang the guy, he said he was going on holiday, but could squeeze us in before he left and we could pay him whenever. That’s the advantage of living in a small town. People trust you. When he had done it, he said it also kills the ants that are in the garden near the house. In summer we are overrun with them, and they always have their biggest nest next to my clothesline. They are mainly only small ants, but when I’m hanging out the washing, they climb up my legs and bite me. Sometimes I do quite a nice dance in the backyard.lol
OK off to speak to Evan on MSN. Isn’t technology great? My son is on the other side of the world and I can talk via the computer. Or message him on my mobile phone. I often wonder what someone like my grandfather (who died in 1959 and never got to see Australia), what would he think of how the world is today? How we can communicate so easily when we are thousands of miles apart. And all the things that have been invented since he died. But even though we have all these things, it seems to me the pace of living is too fast. Where is the extra time that all the labour saving devices were going to give us?
Bye……….
I try to imagine what technology will be like 50 years after I’m dead…just boggles the mind how fast it develops, doesn’t it? 🙂 Happy Father’s Day to M! Are your ants red ants? We have them here and they have a mean bite. RYN: Yes, the egrets are beautiful but I’m glad he didn’t stay long enough to poop all over the pool deck. LOL!

RYN: We use the terms red ants and fire ants interchangeably. So they’ve made it to you, huh? We got them from South America. Nasty animals.

I was thinking the same about technology recently. My mum died in 1979 before the average person had a computer, mobile phone, DVD player etc etc!
