Among the ranks …

… of the employed?

I got a call back a little while ago for a job. The first one of all the apps I have submitted.

It’s for a local extended stay hotel right around the corner from my house. It is less than 6 months old.

I have 4 years previous experience in hotels, the last year with an extended stay hotel so that works in my favor. Although, I was worried that it’s been 15 years next month when I left that hotel lol. It’s been 12+ years since my last job outside of the home. I’m pretty sure that is what has been holding me back.

But yesterday, when I went to ask for an app, I sat there & filled it out & then sorta forced myself on the manager when I turned it in to her lol. So she said she had just hired someone but if it didn’t work out, she’d call me. At the very least, she would hold my app for 6 months.

Then she calls today to let me know that she has a part time available but before I can come in for the tour and the "official" interview, she is waiting on a call back from the owner to approve hiring me, because I am a smoker and they would be worried that I would need too many breaks & would leave the phones unattended. So she has ordered a cordless phone & is awaiting permission from the owner to hire me due to the fact that I do smoke. I sure do hope that isn’t grounds for discrimination … 

As I explained to her yesterday, I am fine as long as I am busy. If I have down time, that is when I crave a smoke. But if I stay busy I am fine. Aside from the anger management issues that may become noticeable lol. And then I so subtly, but not so subtly, reminded her that legally they have to give me two 15 min. breaks and a 30 min. break to eat so as long as I get those, I will be more than fine. But as anyone who has ever worked in the hotel industry knows, that is not possible when you are the only desk clerk working. So you grab a bite of your food in between answering the phones or go pee as soon as it quiets down or in my case, go grab a quick smoke break when no one is around. That is what cordless phones are for besides. As long as I have one of those, no phone call will ever go unanswered. Anyway, since she is not a smoker, she doesn’t understand that where there is a will, there is a way.  Besides, the only one who would suffer, would be me.

 

I’m not crazy about the shifts/hours but I couldn’t ask for better ones either. It is the perfect solution since The Child is out of school for the summer. She will never be left alone while I am at work. Even when school starts back up, it is ideal. Especially for her karate & Girl Scouts schedules. I’d like more than 24 hours but 24 is plenty in the grand scheme of things.

 

 The hours will be as follows:

Wednesdays: 11 pm – 7 am
Saturdays: 3 pm – 11 pm
Sundays: 7 am – 3 pm

The back to back on the weekends will suck and will make for a grumpy Sassy by 5 pm on Sunday but we’ll survive lol

So anyway, keep your fingers crossed for me. Say a little prayer if you so feel inclined. I really want this job … 

Oh, by the way, my God is an awesome God, and has once again provided for us where we least expected it from. Hubby received a check for $125 in the mail yesterday so now The Child’s karate camp is paid for. God is good!
