The Makeover
Around this time, Claudia and Rachel wanted to give me a ‘Makeover’. I had now been living in Colorado for over 5 years now and had bought little to no new clothes in that time. Lori had gotten me some clothing over the years for work, but nothing stylish. They had been ecstatic when I agreed. Even though it had mostly been Claudia’s idea, Rachel went along with it and I still found it hard to say ‘no’ to Rachel.
By now I had been living alone for a few months and the larger spare bedroom with the walk in closet had been empty and left unused. They had me put my entire wardrobe on display like in one of those television shows and then tossed most of it out.
After that we went to a barber shop and they picked out a hair style in a book. They only finally agreed to this style after a long debate in which Rachel wanted me to get a hair style closer to her current boyfriend’s and Claudio firmly said ‘No way”. They requested to the barber to cut it the way in the magazine, and kept telling him to cut it shorter. Up until then, my hair had just been shaggy and long for quite a long time. They actually had the barber give me and Claudia’s oldest son the same haircut. After that, they even waxed my eyebrows.
We went shopping for lunch while the girls plotted which clothing stores to hit. After several stores and hundreds of dollars later I had a new, more stylish wardrobe. I have to agree, I did look good.
Rachel, Me and Claudia before the makeover Rachel and I after the makeover
The first test was at work and it was a hit. The next big test was Lori. I had been invited to a Micro Brew party that Danica was hosting and it would be my first social appearance. It was also going to be the first time Lori would see my new look. When she first saw me she was like “Woah! Look at you!” then when I told her that Claudia and Rachel gave me a makeover she went absolutely crazy and flipped out. I should have been shocked by this, but somehow I’ve come to expect it now. She was now in a relationship with Chris for over a year now and yet, didn’t like the idea of me living my life after her.
She acted like she had wanted to give me a makeover for years and now, in less than a few months on my own, I let others do it. It wasn’t the makeover, it was me moving on that bothered her and I called her out on it. I told her I did nothing wrong. She moved out and I’m just living my life and finally, finally Chris pulled her aside and told her I was right. How that guy just sat there for over a year and let her act like she had two boyfriends was beyond me. I mean, he knew physically, nothing was going to happen, but emotionally, she wasn’t letting me go and that couldn’t be healthy. My biggest fear was that we would have to stop being friends if she couldn’t make that break.
The two of them vanished for over an hour after the blow up and I guessed that they were having a long conversation about it. They were sitting in their car. I was only partly right. They had talked about it, but they were hiding out in the car partially because Lori walked into a ceiling fan and was afraid she would be teased and be called a klutz if everyone saw the cut across the bridge of her nose. The real question was: why would anyone have a ceiling fan that would go that low?
Thankyou for your note. Everything you said, I knew already. I guess when you are so caught up in someone, it’s hard to see the light. Hopefully one day i’ll lay the law down. For now – I’ll just have to hope I can find some kind of happiness.
