Shrub Trimming and Canoe Ride
Sunday was sunny and cool in the morning then cloudy and cool in the afternoon. Temperartures were in the low 60’s. In the morning I trimmed all the shrubs. I was really anal about it on most of them. Instead of taking the electric hedge trimmers, I used mostly the small pruning scissors. I snipped one branch at a time and really focussed on getting them right. After about an hour I grabbed the 2-handed hedge trimmers but I still was very careful with what I trimmed.
During this process I concluded that one of our bushes was too far overgrown and needed to be removed. Five minutes later it was gone. I left the stump in case it decides to grow back. (I did that 2 years ago with one bush and now it is perfect size). My thought is that by removing this bush I will be able to let the others near it grow for 2-3 more years with minor trimming before they get overgrown. We’ll see. It’s an odd thing. We plant shrubs and they can’t grow fast enough. They are only the perfect size for 1 year and then you fight to keep them from getting too big. – I guess I am being too anal.
In the afternoon Diane and I took the canoe out on the Black River. It was the first time out this year. We put in at the boat launch (did’t have to pay the $4). The wind was cool. It was like a fall day except the trees were green. We saw more water birds than ever before. There were at least 5 Great Blue Herons, a few Egrets and also a Black Crowned Night Heron. This last guy let us get up quite close. He had is breeding plumage on – large white feathers from the crown down the back. Wow! We also saw a pelican, numerous sea gulls and about a dozen of some odd bire we couldn’t ID. They were standing on a dead log in the watter – all in a row. We saw them 2 different times but the wind was pushing us around too much for me to get the binoculars on them.
When we got home we were a little chilly. We spent the evening on the couch under the blankets, warming our hands on each other.
Namaste
Sounds like a lovely day!
