Friend Diognosed with Cancer
Bad news. I got an email from my friend Randy. He was asking for prayers from all his friends because his wife, Kelly, was just diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. He’s very religious and knows we’re not but our positive thoughts and best wishes – same as prayers?- are with him.
They’re only 45 years old! He and Kelly are one of the 3 couples we vacation with at the NC coast every year. I went for a bike ride to clear my head and then we talked on the phone. He told me that the cancer was in both ovaries. It has spread to the abdomen where she has a tumor and there has been thickening of the fatty wall surrounding the abdomen. Neither of us really knows what this means. The doctor was very honest with her and said that it is not good. I don’t really know what this means either. They can’t meet with the oncologyst until Friday. Fortunately their appointment is at the Indiana University Oncology Dept. which is notoriously famous among us bikers since they were the ones who successfully treated Lance Armstrong for advanced testicular cancer. He went on to win 7 consecutive Tours de France.
Randy was pretty shook up and I was worried because he was on the cell phone driving while we talked. We finally got cut off due to a poor signal, which maybe was a good thing. They just bought a new beach house on a lake in Indiana but have not been able to sell their old house.
They are one of the nicest, happiest couples we know. Kelly is the strong, logical one while Randy is the more impulsive, emotional one. Kinda reversed from many couples. She’s very active with volunteer work in addition to working to help get their 2 kids through college, keeping up the home and is a very domesticated cook. We love having her on the vacation trips because of her love for cooking while the rest of us sit around and watch her. She always brings us home made jam and she always remembers to bring some special flavored coffee for Diane that she gets locally
That’s Kelly on the left with the light blue shirt and Randy next to her.

Awful news. Caught early enough, and with aggressive treatment, there may be some hope, but it’s a tough one. There’s a history of it in Lady Wife’s family, so most of the women have a hysterectomy in their early 40’s just to be safe.

Good writing about a terrible situation hitting you and Diare “so close to home.” Dammit, they are so young. She and her family will be in my thoughts now.
