Still not well

My God what is wrong with my CAR!?  I FINALLY got it started, after walking up to the servo up the road with my jerry can.  People look at you like you’re a terrorist when you walk along the street during the day swinging a jerry can.  Even more so when you’ve got the fuel and are bringing it back.  I bought a funnel as well, just to make it easier.  my car’s been sitting in the same spot out on the street for probably over a month now, and despite trying to start it, it just won’t start, even with the new battery and changing the spark plugs last time.  Last time the problem was the fuel, so I figured it would be the same this time, hence walking with the jerry can.  I filled it and and tried to start the car, but nope.  I gave up and got ready for work.

Today I tried again.  I was meant to go for my dressing change today, but I woke up at 11am, and my appointment was at midday, so there was no way I was going to catch a train and a bus and make it there on time, being a two hour trip.  Part of the idea of trying to get the car going was to make the trip quicker as well.  So I tried the car again this morning, and after turning it for a second time, it started!!  Couldn’t believe it.  But my God did it sound BAD!!  It idled and vibrated SO roughly!  Like I was revving the shit out of it just trying to get the fuel through or whatever just to get it running how it should, but even revving it, it would vibrate with the revving!  It sounded terrible!  I decided to risk it and drove it around the block.  I thought it was gunna conk out on me because it seemed to keep backfiring at me every few seconds!  This horrible chugging sound, but it didn’t quite cut out.  I’m thinking of maybe doing the jerry can thing again one more time in the future, but for the time being I’ve parked my car in a different spot around the corner, where not as many neighbours can stickybeak at what I’m doing.  Bad thing is it’ll probably sit there for another month or so but this time it will be covered in leaves from the damn trees.  Makes me wonder why I bothered re-registering the stupid thing.  I’m unsure of what to do with it or how to get rid of it.  My first car I just gave to the wrecking yard.  I don’t feel right giving my parents old car, although now mine bought outright, to the wreckers.  I just wish I knew what was wrong with it and if it just needs to be flushed with fuel, which is what I’m hoping, but yeah could be anything.  It’s been forever since it had a service.

I don’t really have anything to say today.  I rescheduled my appointment for Monday at 11am, which should be slightly easier and I might be able to have a nap when I get back on Monday afternoon before work.  Monday is meant to be a hell of a hot day, 36 degrees they are saying.  Ergh.  Glad the housemates turned the aircon on today cos its so fucking humid.  I just about died walking home from work this morning!  So so hot.  Being Sunday tomorrow I’ll have to walk home again because buses don’t start until two hours after I finish.  I’m thinking I might be able to return to gym tomorrow, although I know I’m still not completely well.

I had a car once that there was always something wrong with it. Never could figure out why the damn thing wouldn’t start or would start and then conk out. I agree with Tobi…your car is a dirty honking lesbian.

Cars are designed to be driven regularly and can develop a lot of issues from prolonged sitting. I would suggest maybe taking it on a drive a couple times a month at least. You should allow the engine to get fully warmed up, too – a quick trip around the block is not good for it, either. (Water is an unwanted, natural byproduct of engine combustion, which can cause problems if the engine doesn’t get hot enough to burn it off). Something that might help when starting is allowing the fuel pump to “prime” before starting the engine. The fuel pump runs for about 5 seconds after you turn the key “on” (to the position just before Start). You can almost hear it if you listen closely. If you want, you can turn the key off, then do it again. This way the fuel pump will have run and primed the system (prepared the fuel lines for ignition) a couple of times before you actually start the engine. That might help. Beyond that, if the engine is started, then fuel is flowing – so revving it once running won’t change or help anything.

My bigger concern would be the engine oil, which you may be aware of but didn’t mention. Of course the most important thing is to make sure it’s full. But anyway, again after sitting for some time, the oil has long since dripped off of all the engine parts down into the oil pan. So the parts are then all dry, with no lubrication, and it will take a little bit for the oil to be spread around onto the pistons and other internal moving parts. That may be where the vibration is coming from. Though again there’s not much you can do there other than drive the car more regularly, and make sure the oil level is full and changed once in a while. A synthetic oil is better at keeping the parts lubricated longer as well as getting to the parts quicker, but it’s also more expensive, so I can’t necessarily recommend it to you. Anyway, I’d be glad to look at it and help if I were there, but figured I’d just give some food for thought anyways. Good luck. 🙂

I reckon you should take it to a repair place and set yourself a limit on how much you want to spend to fix it. If they tell you it will cost more than that then take it to the wreckers. xxx
