Day 17 – Someone from your childhood

Dear Matty,

We don’t see or talk to each other anymore, but we used to be best friends in primary school.  You were hardly ever there, preferring to go pig-shooting with your brothers during the nights and probably sleeping all day instead of going to school, but whenever you were at school, I looked forward to seeing you.  Your stories were always so fascinating!  We were known to all the others as ‘Salt and Pepper’ because we had the same first name and surnames beginning with ‘S’ and ‘P’ respectfully.
I wonder how you’re doing these days.  I remember you got a job at the power station during high school and preferred to work there for the ridiculously good money – I found that out when you said you bought a brand new ute in CASH over the counter.  Once again, that woulda been for your Pig-shooting.  I remember the gruesome stories of how to kill a pig, as well as when you had to climb trees to avoid being ripped to shreds by the massive beasts.  I hit one in my car once driving along the Gore highway and the damn thing nearly tore my car off the road!  I’m amazed there didn’t appear to be any damage but damn it was a tough THUD when the car connected with it.  I presume it was running across the highway.  I know it certainly wasn’t a roo!
Anyway, yeah, thanks for being a childhood friend to me – you were pretty cool.  Extremely homophobic I always knew but I didn’t even think that way back then.  I guess that’s pretty much why we never really kept in touch.  You dropped outta school, I completed it.  As far as I know I’m pretty sure I know where I can find you, back in our hometown, but who knows where you are.

from Matt

I’d be way too scared to go pig shooting. Not that I really want to kill anything in the first place but if I had to I’d pick rabbits. They’re a pest here anyways and it’s not like they can turn on you and kill you! That’s pretty sad that even as kids you could recognise that he was homophobic and that he obviously got the notion from home. I’d hate to think that your preference alone iswhy you guys didn’t keep in touch. If so, he is missing out on some great friendships! xxx

By pigs do you mean wild boars? I’ve heard those things are gruesome looking buggers. I, personally don’t find a fascination with hunting at all but, you know, that’s me. I’ve found that with friends of mine we can be vastly different and have totally different things going on in our lives, have different viewpoints, etc. and still find our commonalities. It’s kind of incredible!
