When will the world grow up?!
Did anyone read the front page of the Courier Mail today? I was only informed of it by a workmate of mine, who is a lesbian, and I bought a copy of it (for like the first time ever lol) and I jsut got done reading it then. Naomi informed me on what it was about at work today.
I found a similar msn article if you don’t know what I’m on about

In the words of Ellen DeGeneres, "It’s Personal."
I SO wished I could’ve taken a guy to my formal, but going to a country school, and me not having a boyfriend at the time really didn’t work in either way for my favour! But the point is I wanted to, but I knew I couldn’t.
I think it’s great that word got out to some of the staff about this, which means some of the boys are actually opening up to their teachers about what should be rightfully theirs. I just hate it how we are not treated normal, and I’m not going to turn this into some massive gay-activist session, but seriously I’m sick of it.
I read articles like this and I hear of THIS story in the US last week and I’m near brought to tears.
How the fuck can people discriminate and promote violence against people who are just being themselves!? It makes me sick that in the world we live in today, things still haven’t changed. Australia still doesn’t have equal rights or gay marriage, people are still hung in some countries if they are caught engaging in gay sex! I mean, seriously! What HARM are we doing? No wonder the fucking suicidal rate for gay youth is SO high, no wonder there are so many youth of anti-depressant medication! Because it keeps being DRILLED into their head that the natural feelings they are having are WRONG, IMMORAL and causing INJUSTICE!
It just amazes me, it really, incredibly does. Enough so that my grammar and the way I try to type my words don’t even come out right! It’s preposperous! Where do people get off saying that a guy or girl cannot take his/her same-sex partner to their own formal? I know to celebrate the only time in my life where I have completed 12 years of schooling not including kindergarden and pre-school, I would SO want the guy I care for most there to celebrate it with me!
This reminds me of the movie "Prom Queen" where a guy takes the Catholic church to court all in order so that he can bring his boyfriend to the prom. It also reminds me of the episode of Queer As Folk where Brian turns up to Justin’s formal and they steal the limelight with their formal dance. I remember seeing that episode as a kid and just crying. It was amazing. I mean sure it was a TV show, but it definitely touches on so many issues that old tradionalists just ignore and pretend don’t exist.
Really, you can probably tell, the whole point of this entry is basically to ask no-one in particular, or anyone who will listen this question…
WHEN WILL THE WORLD GROW UP?
I do realise there are way more important issues in the world that need addressing, and contraversial issues like abortion, the Death Penalty etc, but for homosexuality to even be an issue is just… pathetic! I don’t get it. At all. I realise I’m speaking from a gay man’s perspective, but being gay definitely doesn’t rule my life. I just am. I don’t think of myself as any less a person just for who I’m attracted to – that’s just my natural feeling. Can I help that? People who say it’s a phase or a choice are the people who really shit me. REALLY shit me. Would I CHOOSE to be gay in a world that hates and discriminates against gays this much?? STILL? I am just glad that I was born in the 80’s, because if I was born earlier I’d be struggling. You don’t hear of gays much before the 60’s, probably because those who were had to repress it so much in fear for basically their life! So they married a lady, had kids, bought a house whatever. I just can’t live a lie. Why would I live a lie? I mean yeah I hate being gay sometimes, a lot of the time, and it’s for many reasons, especially reasons like this one. Because of narrow-minded traditionalist wankers who think they can force male students to take a female partner to their OWN formal in view of their traditional practices and doctrines. If I could’ve been born a straight guy I would’ve been. At least you don’t have to deal with this bullshit and be shit upon for who you fucking are!
i’m with ya on this hunni!!! (((HUGS)))

Our priorites are a little backwards in the States.

even in latte-liberal seattle, home of the gays, we have hate crimes. it’s amazing.

I agree whole heartedly. It’s disgusting that we live in a society which still promotes inequality and discrimination based on uncontrollable grounds – whether it’s racism, gender or sexuality. It’s deplorable that gay marriages aren’t legal here…why should I, as a heterosexual woman, have any more right to legitimising my relationship than you do?! It’s shameful. *hugs*

Yeah – you’d know my stance on this one. It also annoys me the people who say it’s a choice – as if you’d choose to be vilified and prejudiced against.

I note also that these are private, religious-oriented schools.

yeah, it is sad that the world focuses on issues like this instead of the bigger things…like countries at war! oh wait, they do. but you’re right, this is a personal choice for people, and i don’t feel it’s right that the government(of any country) feels that they can pass laws on it. it’s like taking “in God we trust” off of our money because someone said that it offended them. sigh. hugs!
