The Thrill Of The Trespass
At the core of the thrill of youth, I think, is one unspoken, unknown principal. It’s often called "the freedom from responsibility," but it’s seldom looked at in it’s positive, inverted sense. To be free from responsibility means we lack it, but what do we gain as a result of this particular lack? As youths, without the responsibility of managing the world, or even our own lives…we possess a freedom of wandering exploration with little consequence. The world is owned and managed by grown-ups, who are far too busy struggling to pay us children much mind…and while they toil, we are free to poke around amongst the crumbling edifices of all that came before us. Children who are brought up in times of hardship have the advantage. Limited means and resources sharpen one’s scope of perception, and filter out all but the most essential, and most worthy elements– not just in a material sense, but in a mental and philosophical sense as well. A child will compensate his narrow options with a surge of imagination, and be just as happy with his dusty tennis ball and stick as another child would be with all the toys in Toys R Us. When we come up in age in hard times; in a world of shit that isn’t our problem; it’s like being raised in an endless junk yard. Things from the boom years sit idle and untended, and trespassing amongst them is easy in the world-weary apathy of their owners and caretakers. Go ahead, take it apart, nobody uses that thing anymore. With so much time, and so many answers just waiting to be uncovered, it’s only natural that they lead to bigger questions. Where is God? What is beauty? Why am I? This is the place I grew up in, and the place we’ve once again returned. I believe amazing things are coming, if not here already…

I didn’t have a youth free of responsibility. Hardship meant I had to grow up early and fend for myself. At 24 I’m already a tired, world-weary old woman. I mourn my lost youth sometimes, because I feel like I missed out on something.

RYN: My fault for assuming. Your profile says you started the diary in ’03, but you only have entries from this year. This is why I thought you might have ‘friends only’ entries.
