A complaint to the noisy Anime girls

As it is I am a very restless sleeper. I toss and turn and will wake up a few times during the night. I have a sound machine that is good for my first stretch of sleep. Then it starts to get too loud and I shut it off. I can’t function very well without enough sleep.

I notice that I’m not that patient compared to how I was years ago. I think that I am fairly tolerant though. There are two Asian girls who live across the hall from me. At one point the landlord referred to them as "the Chinese girls." They are up late at night so I think they go to university. And I don’t think that they work. It was so nice during the summer when they went away for a few months.

During the day and evening it isn’t so bad. I can hear them blabbering away sounding like Anime characters. So I call them "The anime girls." The last neighbor that I had was amazingly quiet. I couldn’t hear anything when he had friends over. I don’t even know if he owned a t.v or stereo.

As I mentioned during the day and I can hear those girls I just tune it out. I turn up the t.v or stereo a little bit louder. At night it seems like torture though. The bedrooms in my place are at the front of the apartment. And the layout for them is pretty similar for each one. Last night I was sleeping and falling asleep on the couch. I decided to go to bed as I had to be up around 6:30 today. I could hear music and voices from the Anime apartment. This went on until almost midnight.

Noise from the hallways can be easily hear. In the past I did try to be friendly to the girls. We were leaving our apartments at the same time. I said hi in a friendly voice. One of them said "hi" in a monotone way. I have opened up my door and said shhh a few times when things are getting loud in there. And they did seem to tone it down a bit right after I did that.

Last night though I opened my door said shhh then read for a while before bed. They had people over and were still being loud after 12:30. I opened up my door and said in a fairly loud voice "be quiet" then close to one it was still happening. So I said more angrily "keep it down." The music still played and their loud cartoonish voices carried as though they were right next to me. At that point I lost all of my patience.

I walked into the living room and I wrote a note. "Please keep the noise down before midnight. I have to be up early from Monday to Friday. I don’t mind on the weekends." I think I was being more than reasonable. They have lived in that place for close to a year. It is two girls sharing a one bedroom apartment. In my opinion that space is too smal for two of them. I had thought about writing a note to them many times before. I know face to face complaints are best but from there reaction when I said hi before, that isn’t the way to go.

I don’t expect them to reply to my note. And if they have people over on weekends I don’t have a problem with that. My bird is noisy at times but I do my best to keep him quiet. I just hope they won’t use that to retaliate in the future. And he seldom makes noise after 10.

I think your note was very nice. Hopefully they’ll keep it down in the future. If not, can you make a complaint to your landlord?

Sometimes, people just don’t know they’re making a lot of noise, or disturbing other people so yes, I’m glad you left a note.. now if they keep making noise that’s another thing.. but they need to know firstly, that they are disturbing others.
